I just went looking for new shifter boot and bushings and clips only to realize my shifter is obsolete. It still works great, thank God, but I noticed on the Hurst website about the only thing they offer is the old tried and true Competition Plus shifter

I am using a Verti-Gate I shifter, what is everyone else using on there stick transmissions?

I will be trying this hurst ram rod. If I don't care for it I'll go back to the competition plus.
This style inline is out of production also similar to your vertigate.

Give Brewers a call. I don't see those shifters listed on their website but they may be able to help. tmm http://www.brewersperformance.com/

The Ram Rod is GOOD. Any of the Super Shifters are also good. Nothing wrong with the Competition Plus either.

If it is Hurst, it's good, OEM or aftermarket. I use Competition Plus, OEM 64-65 A Body for A833 4 speed or A833 O/D.

the body of the shifter looks identical to mine. I wonder why they quit making them? On the street they are a small pain in the *** but in race mode they are awesome

You usually have to cut up your floorboards. I'd never do that...

Also the original Mr Gasket vertigate.

Hurst ram rod was a copy of the vertigate.

I have the Hurst ram rod in my dart

My vertigate looks like SSBA 's ramrod or very close anyway (says Hurst on the stick ) just a different reverse lever.

You say the V-gate is a small pain on the street? Well in my DD Id have to disagree(lol). It was a major pain. When I was a kid I wanted one so bad, so when I had the opportunity to buy one cheap a few years ago from a guy at the track who was about to throw it as far as he could, I jumped on it.Turns out it needed a rebuild. After the rebuild, I got it all set up and working real nice. Then I realized something; They work fabulous when up-shifting. Not quite so fab. when ,coming back down. And when your sliding around and trying to grab a gear, well lets just say it was an experience. Anyway, I got tired of it and replaced it with an old Mr.Gasket Bang Shifter,H-pattern,that I had previously been using. That was 10 years ago. The V-Gate is still on the shelf. The Bang is still working great, now with 1/2 rods.

I'll STICK with the ol tryed and trued Competition Plus.

V-gate here. No change contemplated.

If anyone wants to part with one of the Hurst Ramrod shifters id be interested! As far as the original poster, its personal preferance but generally an inline stlyle isnt quite as friendly on your floorpan or user friendly per se.

I am installing the v gate I have had for years. With the 4 speed hump in a duster is there much trimming that needs to be done?

when I installed mine the side of the tunnel rubbed on the shift rods and the original shifter mount had to be redesigned a bit. I love my inline shifter and wouldn't change it for anything short of a ratchet shifter if they made one for a A833.
When I said it was a pain in the *** what I meant was to shift up thru the gears you have to bang the gears -if you shift it lazy it goes 1st to 4th. Down shifting isn't to bad just gotta lift the little handle every time

i'm a hurst fan all the way. "back in the day" hurst was considered the "best" of what you could buy. in the late 60s early 70s there were about 5 major companies selling shifters - hurst, mr. gasket, mickey-thompson and a few other "off brands" that you could buy from j.c. whitney and the old "warshouski's." the off brand shifters were "el cheapos." i think it would be hard to argue that hurst was not the most popular and best shifter back then. before automatic transmissions got as technical (and good) as they are today, there were lots of drag racers who ran 4 speed trannies. AND most of them used hurst shifters. the comp plus was the most common and best all around shifter for the street then - and now. hurst came out with their "super shifter" as a choice to the comp plus. the only real difference between the comp plus and the super shifter is that the super has a shorter throw - at least 2" less. i prefer the comp plus over the super for the street as the super "feels" it is just for drag racing.

i've purchased stuff from brewers and had a good experience with them - both on the phone and in the final order. i think they can rebuild any hurst shifter. you might call them.

if you have the opinion that hurst is not the best, consider this, hurst comp plus shifters were OEM on: all 69 and up mopars; all gto's; boss 429 mustang; all of ford's regular production muscle cars; all buick and olds race cars; all trans am's. actually, chevy was the only company that didn't use the hurst comp plus sticking with their own production shifters on their "muncie" trans.

I agree Hurst is the #1 choice for most people. The people who don't like Hurst are the same ones who have NOT taken the time to adjust the lever stops properly (can't blame the company for that). I just wish they would put some research and development $$$ into 4 speeds again. Seems like they have 10 automatic shifters( all virtually the same ) and the same 3 archaic "H" pattern shifters. They have dropped the inline shifter altogether. How about something like an inline ratchet shifter?

I have the Super Shifter in my GTS, my dad has a Comp Plus in his Coronet. What Jimharvard said is true, the Super Shifter is a Comp Plus with shorter throws. Between the two, I like the Super Shifter, which is no longer available.

If the super shifter is no longer available the that just leaves the comp plus
sure isn't much choice is there?

Before I sold my Duster, I removed all of the 4-speed stuff for use in the Barracuda. As you can see from the photo, I used a Ram Rod back then; I actually have 2 of them.

Now that I'll be running a T-56 in the Barracuda, I picked up an E-body Competition Plus and pulled the pistol grip handle.
