i have a 360 v8 with 10 to 1 compression 474 lift cam and 340 heads.
the car is going to be street driven, and i would like to go a little better then stock.
which would be better a msd or a mopar performance recurve distributor ?

Can't beat the $45 HEI distributor on ebay for the performance/price ratio. Many posts here, (most positive).

..or a Rock Auto replacement and add a bit of weld in the slots
...maybe 50 bucks

HEI setup with vacume advance. Whether you use the $45 ebay ones, or higher end. Great reliability and performance for your buck. I currently run a DUI HEI (Davis Unified Ignition) no issues whatsoever.

Parts house factory replacement. Grab one for a 73 Dart V8, if you want electronic.
Slap it in, see how it runs. If you like the curve, go with it.
If you want to change the curve, get a dist curve plate from 4 seconds flat.

The factory ignition is tried and true. One of the best ignitions ever invented. Good enough to propel cars into 9's.
No reson to get all jiggy with it. Put in a Chrysler unit, the way Ma Mopar intended.

That's definitely a good option for the money at about $45 with adjustable vac advance.

Then fire that nice factory mopar dizzy off with a standard GM 4 pin HEI module , and a good HEI compatible coil, and toss the ballast resistor, and stock mopar electronic brain box right in the trash can.

Another vote for MSD...if you put a Mopar dist. in be sure to carry an extra coil, control box, ballast ect. cause your going to need them..

The mancini dizzy looks like the mopar one but you can curve it real easy.

The Summit Pro Billet with vacuum advance. Same as the MSD, uses MSD bushings to adjust mechanical advance. Only difference is it's about 100 bucks cheaper.

For street driven car, factory mopar recurved dizzy for me, easily by parts at any parts store if on the road an have a problem.

The Mopar distributor/ECU is much harder to retrofit to an early points car and is much more expensive than HEI, and less reliable, all for a weaker spark (but acceptable). But, it would make many guys here happy, even though not original for your year. Decide what their thumbs-up is worth to you.

More misguided information.

All we can do is offer our opinions and let the OP decide.

Neither pro or con on the mopar electronic, but don't buy into the negative BS.
I've got a couple of hundred thousand miles on Mopar electronics.
I never had a coil or ignition box fail ("actual" Mopar)...
Did have a Chinesium orange box quit, and a couple of ballast resistors.
Currently running a "real" 35 year old orange box with an equally old Accell Super Stock coil, seeing 6000 RPM every time I drive it...
Oh yeah, and how many HEI modules have failed? (though either Mopar or HEI is easy to get parts for, and cheap)
Maybe I've just been lucky?

It's not so much that the Mopar OEM stuff is bad or anything, just that the electronics and coils we have available to us are more efficient and powerful than that of 40 or more years ago. (for the average car)
Of course racers had decent equipment back then but at what price for the average Joe.
HEI is simply one of the best running most efficient and powerful system out there as far as bang for the buck.

The title of the thread is "Best bang for the buck" and "better than stock" is what he requested.
That's HEI in a nutshell.

You constantly talk about how hei is a more powerful system, so I ask you, prove it.
And dont show me your little video with the hei spark. Prove it to us in real world performance.
Prove to me how much better your car is than everyone else's cars with factory ignition.
And when your ready to line your car up against my little orange box Chrysler ignition Dart, let me know.
Warning: Prepare for the smackdown :burnout: :glasses7:

Be careful of the 45 buck HEI unit. They have a bastard Bosch module that's only compatible with Holdens in Australia. They are a sumbitch to get here and are not cheap.
