Specifically trying to find technical information regarding the ins and outs of how the Mopar 305 was built by de-stroking the 340 back in 1970 to qualify to race in the Trans Am series against Mustangs and Camaros (and used once in a winged Dodge during a NASCAR Daytona 500). Interested in identifying the specifics of the rotating assembly (crank, rods, pistons) and cylinder heads. Or if you have a motor, I'd like to look it over. Thank you.

There was also a 305 NASCAR Hemi.

I have the Direct Connection Performance Book that goes into great detail. The short version is that there was a special 340 block produced for use in Trans Am and NASCAR that could be configured for a number of displacements. The 1970 305 used a 2.96" stroke crank. Standard 4.04" bore landed it at 304 cubic inches.

They also used the stock heads. Rules is rules. The T/A head had the off set rockers and the ports did not have the pushrod pinch in the intake valves.

I have not seen that crank for sale in a very long time.

this right out of the book , click on the pdf file.

Cheers.

Thanks for the race bulletin above. It mentions the part number for the 304 Trans-am crankshaft and describes it as a "full radius, forged". I wonder what is meant by "full radius"? Is that a different construction/profile from the 340/318 crankshafts?

this was at the Welborn Winged Warriors event a few months ago and man was it radical sounding

My understanding is , it was used on 426 hemi motors
and on some six pack motors , and that it was a racing
type crankshaft, being full radius made the crank stronger
and less likely to snap at the rod journals. Please note that
the drawing is not to scale or 100% accurate. LOL
It is just to give you the basic idea and difference between
a full radius crank and a undercut radius crank.

Cheers.

In case you don't have it part# P4452974 for the 2.96" crankshaft.

Maybe a google search will find one. like here-http://www.moparpartsgiant.com/parts/mopar-crank-2-96-stroke-a-eng~p4452974.html

Bob Tarozzi talks about the development of this motor in his book "Turk: The Lives I've Lived". There's a thread about it on here somewhere. He says he welcomes questions at rtarozzi@yahoo.com.

MoparPartsGiant lists the 305 crankshaft, however, when contacted, the response was the item was "discontinued".

Seems like a hard part to find. And if you do $$$$$$$$!

Was that the same size as the engines that were used in the Iroc series Daytona's ? Or was it 306 ci ?

the 1990 I.R.O.C. engines were 355, 475 hp @ 6800, X block @ 4.020" x 3.48" Moldex crank, 6.125" Carillo rods, Diamond 10:1 pistons, ported MP 360 high swirl iron heads, Holley 750, Victor intake. the other 305 was used in the trans am road race cudas and challengers in 1970 + 1971
