just got my 65 Barracuda finished where iwas happy ready to race and show /
Took it out at noon and did a few runs ,and last run I added a little timing ran a full quarter .
It was best run ever ,50 feet short of line it started blowing smoke hard out of left pipe. I got it slowed down did a minor check its an oil smoke not coolant . So I got it home, let it cool down it wasn't knocking or doing any thing funny but smoke got real bad .
. No leaks no holes in motor runs fine pulled the plugs # 1 felt rough ,like I may have melted a ring . No compression tester here but hoping for best . No broken rockers there all pumping yet , good sign . no oil puddling on floor
Where else to check before before Tear down ?? So dam mad 1st racing was tonight .

Pull the left plugs and see which one sucks the oil. Make sure it's not pulling through the pcv.

You got some trouble shooting to do but you may be lucky and only sucked an intake gasket .

Could be a blown head gasket between cylinders, seen this before.

its been good for over a year since I built it , only thing I changed was the carb this morning to a shaved 750 to 800 and it was making the pass of its life it ran fine on the way home 1 mile , smoking like a ***** thow out the left pipes

the blown head gasket was my next quest in the teardown dam that would save me a lotta cash over a broken head or blown pistons or scratched cylinder walls

I know this is not what you want to hear but my brothers 340 drove about 30 miles slow as she goes and we had mec tell us it was a cracked head, we pulled the intake and the right side head and the head gasket was blown between 4 and 6, we could see where it blew the head seal straight across... I do hope not, but it was changed out in no time..

10 k in motor and trans 2 1/2 years ago , had a lot of bugs to work out ,then 2 back surgeries . Not a lot of miles on this motor but 1 head still cost 2 k whole motor 8k so would really settle for a junk gasket right now lol. car still runs hard , just blowing a lot of smoke so I am optamistic yet a compression test with my fingers still says it could be minor yet . I don't have a comp. tester for peanut plugs here at home YET lol

If your pressurizing and filling the crankcase with smoke sounds to me like a head gasket. If just out the left exhaust I'd think intake gasket.

do a compression test or
remove the rocker shaft from the left side
so that, you know the valves are closed

use a leak down tester, pressurize each cylinder ,
should be able to find the leak? > blown head gasket

well the crankcase is filling because , when I pull my pvc out of the right side valve cover
its blowing smoke , but running its blowing hard out the the left bank, but it is oil and not coolant so praying when I pull the intake I'm only about 15 more bolts from taking the head off too . so I really hope that's as bad as it gets or I"m out 8k + and would have 1 awesome 65 barracuda for sale with 1 nasty tsi trans but staying positive yet . Pissed enough I didn't even go with the boyz racing tonight .I can afford my labor but I cant afford a new powerplant . No bad noises ocuured yet .but no compression test either .

Run the compression test before you turn a wrench on it.

yah compression test next move tommoro , I didn"t have 1 here with a fitting for peanut plugs We all know its hard to start a summer like this thow .

Also, if the compression test is low you can apply air to that cylinder with both valves closed.

Air exiting the carburetor means a burned or bad seating intake valve.

Air exiting the exhaust pipe means a burned or bad seating exhaust valve.

Air exiting through the oil fill on the valve cover means air is getting past the rings.......or there's a hole in a piston. Either should be evident on the compression test, but applying air to the cylinder as described will narrow it down.

Do the compression test DRY. There is no need to do it wet as long as you do the air test as I outlined.

I would pull all spark plugs.
look for the one or two with oil on it.
found mine on the right bank.
second time out with a new stroker engine,
went to cosmetic head gaskets, no more problems

Had the exact same thing happen to my 340 back in the day, my head gasket looked just like the one above. Sucking in oil from the valley. Even had oil running out the tail pipe.

Man that's just what I am hoping for # 3 showed under 60 lbs would be cheapest fix

compression test showed # 3 down under 60 lbs head ready to come off in the morning . Hoping for the least of problems or I have to pull motor set aside and pull and put in my sons ram 360 mag for now Thanks brother hagr812

Why stop there? Apply air to the cylinder with the valves closed. Then you will KNOW what the problem is before you remove one single head bolt. You cannot have a complete diagnosis if you simply rip the head off.

No, the cheapest fix would be a broken valve spring. What if you pull the head without finishing the diagnosis as I describe and everything looks good? You will not KNOW what the problem is because you didn't finish the diagnosis. Finish the diagnosis as I outlined and you will know exactly what the problem is before you ever remove the first bolt.

You posted for good advice. I gave you the best. Use it.
