from CNN:

Sears (SHLD) said on Thursday that it would close 109 Kmart stores and 41 of its namesake Sears outlets. The announcement came on the same day that Sears disclosed plans to sell its iconic Craftsman tool brand to Stanley Black & Decker (SWK).

Suks..

Well craftsman has been dropping in quality for years now. But now, they'll really take a dump.....

I just read that Stanley will open a factory in this country to manufacture the tools. I think it's a win. The stuff they're selling now can only go up in quality.

I wonder if Sears will still market the Craftsman tools and provide the "lifetime" guarantee?
I've used that guarantee several times - and one time more than once on the same day.

(addendum)I just read that Sears will continue to sell the Craftsman brand tools. B&D will also be able to sell them through stores other than Sears.
Oh yeah, B&D paid $900 million for the Craftsman brand.

My German made Black and Decker belt sander just died.
It must have been at least 20 years old. Hard use.
Parts seem to be obsolete.
Black and Decker 7498 Parts List and Diagram - Type 1 : eReplacementParts.com

I replaced it with a Porter Cable. Made in Mehico.
Best I could do. I needed one to work a project.
Porter Cable seems to make good stuff.

i just noticed about a month ago that the local sears had packed up and left town
instead, a harbor freight had set up shop in the same building

same quality tools, but better price if you ask me
(of course, i dont think im old enough to remember when sears tools were made in the US of A)

I was gonna say DeWalt as well.

Although I have a B&D "Dewalt" (both names on box) radial arm saw that was only built between 1962 and 1964.

Wow, I have one of those too. Mine has both names on the saw itself.

If they start making them back in the USofA then it will be very rare as now even Snap-On is making some overseas

For me craftsman made good quality affordable tools with a life time warranty !
As a young boy my first tools were craftsman from my Dad .
They will always have a place in my heart !!
I will miss sears and Kmart !!!

I was at a Menard's the other day, and noticed that they had a large display of Crescent brand tools. the quality looked really good, and the prices were like Harbor Freight.

B&D were great thirty years ago, but everything I bought from them in the past few years is junk. Craftsman used to be the best for price and quality for the hobbyist, but the last two 1/4" ratchets I bought lasted only a few days. Even "professional grade" brands are a mixed bag when it comes to quality.

Sears is not going anywhere. restructuring , yes, they are closing larger retail stores, while maintaining small town home stores. these stores are independently owned, the owner pays the rent and salaries, and Sears supplies the goods. These stores carry the staples of Sears, tools, appliances, garden equipment and other home hardware. I still buy craftsman brand and always will. Black and Decker and Sears go hand and hand, both been around A LONG time.

Yes there are still a select number of sears stores left , it's not like it used to be !!
They used to be at pretty much every mall here now only a few scattered left !

I just bought my stepson damn near a whole set of craftsman for a tad over 100 bucks. 1/4" drive with 3/8" drive along with combination wrenches, both metric and standard, and a decent set of screw bits. Main reason for buying craftsman was the lifetime warranty, which had better stay intact!

It wasn't that long ago that Sears relented and started making some CRAFTSMAN brand tools outside the U.S., SEARS brand tools were always less $ and more often made
somewhere else. I still have My Grandfathers 1/2-9/16 & 9/16-5/8 double box end Craftsman wrenches in My box at work, don't get to use them there as much these(metric)
days, but still good and compact. Crescent brand turned to outside sourcing their product maybe 7yrs. ago or so, just broke My 12" adj. USA made w/a little help from a pipe:BangHead:
& now the replacement is twice as thick to make up for steel that's half the quality. I also have taiwan wrenches purchased in the early '80's that are still in My box from HF when
they sent you a little paper pamphlet in the mail, and I've put a jag on them a bunch, esp the 2 most common tie-rod locknut sizes for years(22&21mm). There are professional
grade brands made there,Genius brand is a pretty decent quality line of tools taiwan made. Now we have Gearwrench etc., there are plenty of U.S.A. made tools being made, but
you pony-up, or buy foreign. Channel-lock is still being made here in PA, and anytime I need pliers that they mfr., I buy theirs. I doubt Craftsman is going anywhere, and I still
pick something up there now & then, but I have most of what I need as a pro, so most of what I buy are "new" things I need. Triple-square,tamper this tamper that dbl torx etc.

Sears is not going anywhere.

We didn't have a Sears store when I was younger either. I think it was 1975 when we got out first one in the area. Before that we had a Sears Catalog Store. Catalog Stores have since been replaced with the modern version of the catalog store. The dot com store! Now we get the item we bought delivered to the door instead of having to go to the catalog store to pick it up when it came in.
But Craftsman tools. Who cares who owns them? Back when America was America we could go to Sears and buy a Go Kart or a shotgun. Of course dare we mention the joy and excitement we felt when the Sears Christmas Catalog showed up? Who actually owns Craftsman is an awful small fish to fry when it comes down to it.
