Hey Guys I am getting closer to engine rebuild time for my 70 Dart 340.

My question is about the W2 Heads P5249769 That I see on Jegs and Summit.

Are they still availible? I know I will need rockers and hold down stands and also an intake and headers.

Has anyone used these particular heads? Any feedback would be great

Brad

I only have bare castings myself. These heads oil via the pushrod. Call Jegs directly for availability.

I thought those are LA heads and oil thru the rockers.

If they have a price they are available afaik.

The W2 is the gold standard for SBM iron heads... you can get 300 cam on the intake side with enough massaging. Mine go about 280 cam. You won't get that far with a J, x or any other iron head. Stock they are reported to be about 240-ish which the Chevy guys would love to see from their iron heads. Good street head IMHO.

They are for the LA head but have forgone the normal oiling in favor of the pushrod oiling as well as the use of rocker stands. For these reasons these heads are labeled “Race heads.”

Only from what I have read the factory (MP) reported 260 cfm OOTB. I have read and heard of ported flow greater than 330 but have not actually seen this proven to me.

Superior street head, excellent race head. 10 second in the 1/4 has been reported over and over again. Hey have not read/seen quicker but do not doubt the ability to do so.

The only draw back is the weight of iron. The valve train is expensive but worth it for the track. And headers are not cheap ether. For the street, maybe not sure much. The Edelbrock head maybe a cheaper/wiser choice. But far be it from me to stop you doing so!!!
You’ll end up calling me, “hypocrite!”

After the first of the year I'm going to flow my virgin W-2's but they are early castings. I'll post the results.

Then I'm going to do the valve job and flow them.

Then, I'm going to force myself to grind the ports. I'm not looking forward to grinding cast iron. I'd just about rather have a sharp stick in the ear, but it needs to be done.

i doubt I would call you a Hypocrite Rumble I appreciate the feedback. I thought about eddys but sadly I think the quality of Aluminum has gone down just a bit for them. I might wait for the new trick flows. Too early to say just seeing what everyone thinks

Be careful with the ones being sold new now
so may different ones
=48 degree
=59 degree
=rocker stands only can use T&D and Jessel rockers (these heads have the lowest stands
=then the ones with the rocker stands a little higher so you can shaft mount your rockers like Norris, Mopar, HS...!
=closed and open chamber
= stock rocker stands
I am sure I am missing some.
Some of the above have the same part number but they are different, do your home work.
These heads make power!
I built a 340 pump gas 379 crank W2 with mirror work flow 287 Hopefully will be firing it up any day.

Greetings All. Not trying to hi-jack this thread, but maybe some of y'all's thoughts on examining used W2 heads would be useful to others besides me.

I may be going to look at a set of bare W2 heads this weekend from a guy that got them from a racer friend a long time ago. He's not sure they've ever been used, but I will assume they have. I don't know the casting or part nos. yet, but he said they were not Econos.

The questions I have are:
1) What should the deck thickness be on a new, '80's-era, W2 head?
2) What is the minimum permissible deck thickness before they become just bench art?
3) What should the height be of the machined rocker stand bosses & from where is this measured?
4) Same as 3) for the valve spring seats?

For these last two, I really mean: How can I spot-check a set of heads in a dirty, dark garage with just a set of calipers to try to be sure I'm not buying something that's been modified beyond use. Thanks!

Make sure they were not over ported and have any epoxy in the ports

1) Measure the depth of the camber (assuming open chambers). .100-115 is about normal.
2) I've seen them have the quench side machined totally off and they were running. I prefer to stick the piston out of the bore.
3) I can't remember but it's in the small block engine book.
4) The best way is to install a valve and use a retainer to measure the seat. If you make them too deep they break into the intake port.

Chances are if they haven't been ported to death they are worth it.

Give this guy a call Hekimian race engines (617-926-0608) he is selling small block aluminum heads(casting's he has made)they flow pretty good and he is doing a cnc program on them too..he builds some SERIOUS motors...

So this fellow Hekimian is casting and selling a SBM head of his own design? J.Rob

Funny I've never heard of it.
You shouldn’t be. It could be THAT new or just super low key. Even more so if it is privately done with a finite amount of funds from a few or one person.

It is surprising to read though.

Interesting site. No Mopar engines posted but he's coming out with his own alum SB head? Interesting. Initially, I was thinking he might be taking someone's bare casting and doing his own finishing work on them (ala: Indybrock heads). Noticed there was even an AMC motor listed with all the Chevy/Ford motors. That's always cool to see.

Yes,that 390 came out nice they topped it off with the MSD Injection went into a AMX:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Just got off the phone with him and he is a uhh lets say VERY good conversationalist. J.Rob

Yes Greg likes to talk been building engines for a longgggggggggggggggggggggggggggg time knows his stuff, that's for sure he's getting my 340 over the winter:thumbsup::thumbsup:

How can you afford it? He told me what his honing procedure is and it is trick for sure but the $$$$ is close to triple what I charge. Oh and that wasn't the laser honing he offers either. J.Rob
