While studying the prospect of carb/intake manifold/air cleaner changes and combinations it becomes necessary to consider air cleaner to hood clearance. My findings for a '72 318 Bbody shows I have more than 1" and less than 1 5/8" air cleaner lid to inside hood insulation pad clearance at the moment. Trying to figure out if an early non-silenced ('68-'69 factory 340) air cleaner can be adapted to the Carter 2-barrel BBD for fun (the 340 build comes later and is not ready yet). The air cleaner adapter I am considering using is 3/4" high.

I used kitchen sponges of varied thicknesses and some white viscous stuff (GOJO creme hand cleaner-you can use something else if you want to). The orange sponge was about an inch high and I went up from there (stacking).

P.S. I hope the watchdogs on this site don't judge this post too graphic and make it disappear.

Silly putty....cheap and more accurate!! The sponge with squash or squoose so you really don't know how close the cleaner is (actually).

The white stuff wipes off on the hood before the sponge ever gets squished. In the first foto you can see after closing the hood, the white soap is untouched. In the second foto, the soap is stuck on the hood insulation. So now I know the clearance is between the thickness of the orange sponge and the two sponges stacked together. By fine tuning the sponges, I can get an exact measurement, just as accurate as any other method if you ask me (OK plus or minus 1/8", let's say). The sponges keep you from damaging anything in the process.

This whole exercise is just to show what can be done when you don't feel like making a 20 mile round-trip to the store for putty/clay.

How do you know??? That's the problem. You could be squashing the whole thing but all you'll see is the Go-jo. It's up to you but I usually stick 3 or 4 tall pieces (cylinders) of silly putty to the air cleaner in different places to see where the hood is closest to the air cleaner. Once the silly putty gets smashed it stays that height no matter what.

Simple physics, when something wet and a little sticky touches something else, the material transfers from one object to the next. Put some GOJO soap in the palm of your hand, and take the index finger of your other hand and just barely touch the soap. Your index finger now has a little dab of soap on it.

Keep decreasing the height of the sponges until there is no transfer of the soap when you close the hood, measure the thickness of the sponge stack at that interval in the test, and that is your clearance.

Roll tin foil in a loose ball.
Worked for me and you can actually measure it.

WINNER< WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes tin foil should also work but it's hard to make it stick in one place??? I little Dum Dum (or double sided tape) will do the trick.
