I have a 81 904 that is rebuilt, (last time it was out about 5000mi) I am installing a 360 with a 272 cam but cannot find a 2400 stall converter for this lock-up trans. This is not going to be a race car.
I have a 727 sitting on the shop floor and could rebuild it to replace the 904, converters are available from several sources for this trans, plus beefier. I'm already swapping out the puny 7 1/4 for an 8 3/4 so the driveshaft will already require shortning and balancing.
What other snafus could I run into; linkage, coolant line fitment etc.
Thanks in advance for the assistance.

I have never changed one for the other but have owned both and had great luck from the 904 and 727 I think your 904 will do great for your 360 that's what I had with a stock 360 four barrel carb with headers and it done good now I have a 727 but it came with the motor ,stick with the 904 and save the other for a spare ,just my 2 cents good luck with your project

Go with the 727, because when you decide to swap in a big block, you will already have the driveshaft the right length. :)

Screw that’s boat anchor 727 crap.

Just convert the 904 to non lock up and get your 2400 stall converter.

727 takes more HP to use and the 904 is alot lighter in weight, but can handle 300-400 HP

You guys calling Mopar transmissions crap.....nice
FYI, the 727 is not crap.....maybe you'd prefer a turbo 350...

Before A-1 Transmissions moved to Wa. and they were still in Antelope Valley I called them for the 904 in my Dart. They pretty much said "We can build it for as much horsepower as you can put in front of it".

Thanks for the feedback; how do I convert to a non-lockup. When I installed the trans, I had the original 904 and an extra non-lockup converter but neither converter would go in. Had to use the factory 81 type converter.

I think it's a different input shaft and valve body. ....

Nothing wrong with the 727, but the reason I like the 904 is the weight difference and the 15-20 Hp a 727 uses up. For a guy using a 318,340,360 motor that is alot of HP not available to put to use.

My 904 was pro built to 600hp via a tried and true professional trans builder who has been doing this for over 30 years.

My converter is good for more power.

It can be done!

I just did this swap in a 72 duster. Existing Trans lines worked. Shortened the driveshaft. The column shift linkage works but won’t allow you to access low gear manually without modification. Other than that easy peasy

They were referring to the difference in HP a 727 soaks up compared to the 904.

Which is better a lock up torque or non lock up ,and why I'm going to be putting torque in my car when I do the motor swap this summer ,going to star gathering up some parts I am going with a stall in a 727

.........You do realize? you cannot simply swap lockup/ non lockup converters?
