I got my trunk and under the lid painted last weekend. I was going to start on the bay this weekend, but I got to thinking:

Even with the hood on and closed, there will be a small gap at the cowl and fenders exposing a small area of the bay, how do you tape this area off?

Its a 70 Dart going Plum Crazy Pearl so the body will be painted assembled.

When custom cars are built, the body is assembled and all of the underhood is painted, up and over onto the top sheetmetal about 1/4". When outside is ready for paint, these lines are feather-edged.

I painted the bay and stopped at the pinch weld at the top where firewall meets cowl. Then painted the outside of the car. That pinchweld is a great breaking point

I painted my Barracuda like this and the engine and the bay got dull from the fine particles of paint in the air and I ended up pulling the motor ,repainting it and repainting the bay before putting the motor back together.

Spend an extra few hrs taping, and seal the engine compartment to the floor.
If you have any doubt that over-spray will get on it, most likely it will.

I'm not worried about the radiator area, but the hood gaps around the fender and cowl when the hood is bolted on. I think the foam weather stripping for houses is the ticket.

Here's a couple of photos of how I tackled mine, I shot the trunk, inside cabin and engine bay at the same time.
Inner fenders were shot off the car then installed. Then it's mask everything of you possibly can for the body color to be added.
