I have a 71 Duster and my wipers aren’t working, I’m getting power to the switch, but not the wipers, I was reading that 71 dusters came with 3 speed wipers, so before I drop the money on a nos switch I need to figure out if I have a 2 speed or 3 speed. I can push the knob in and click it twice to the right, I would assume that means that I have 2 speed wipers, but I want to make sure as both switches look the same to me. Thanks

My standard answer for wipers is to go download a factory shop manual at MyMopar and read through the wiper section in chapter 8, "electrical." Then visit the Passion site which has info on those systems as well. The 2 and 3 speed are quite different. I don't recall that there is a 71 manual, there, but there is certainly a 72. You may have to settle for Dodge vs Plymouth, etc

Ok I was able to get it out with a little working since I didn’t have the key, the number on the side is 2864415 which decides to a 2 speed switch, however I noticed that one of the blades wasn’t plugged in, might that be the issue?

I don't think that connector will go on but one way. They didn't key their harness connectors often. The round one at inst' panels is keyed. Most are just shaped or arranged to go on only one way.
That terminal could be for additional single wire connector. Washer pump? CB radio or other option? They picked 12 volts off the wiper switch for reverse lamps in some models. A manual might reveal that every car like yours has one unused terminal on the wiper switch.

Sounds like you may have a bad switch. 3 speed wipers did not come out until 74 and that year it was an option. the easy way to test the switch is find friend with a 70 to 73 a body and do a little plug and play. i have also found with these old cars corrosion sometimes breaks the connection at the plug in points a little Noalox on the connectors goes along way.

3 Speed wipers were out before 74 for sure. An easy way to ID a 3 speed is to look at the motor under the hood. If its laying parallel to the firewall its a 3 speed. If it sticks out 90° from the firewall, its a 2 speed. Also, I think the 3 speed switch has a small ceramic resistor hanging off the side of it.

Ok i could be mistaken. just never seen a factory install in anything earlier but have sold parts to more than a few guys making the conversion to earlier cars.

Not that rock auto is the be all end all of parts but they only show a 2 speed motor for 71 duster.

The 71 dart wiring diag only shows one configuration for the wiper. Same for the valiant. But the switch configuration is different between the diagrams????

Perhaps the switch is not the correct one for the wiring harness, or perhaps the wiring harness has been swapped?

You could apply 12v to the correct pin of the connector and see if the issue is the motor or the switch /wiring.

I currently own a 73 swinger w/ 3 spd. Owned a 71 duster w/ 3 spd. , and 69 RoadRunner all with original 3 spd. So, not sure when the start date was for them but certainly went back before 74.
The road runner was air grabber. Im not sure but I think the 2spd motor will hit the larger air cleaners on them. I have heard that about the shakers.

Dana67 has some good information just to explain the difference the dart in 71 has a different dash than the dusters/variants/scamps in 72 they all became more uniform with the exception of the rally dash.
