So I get this letter today from Summit Racing. Saying that since I bought more than $500 worth of stuff in 2018, and I live in Colorado, that I need to give this statement of my purchases to my tax guy to file for use/sales tax.

I dont get it. If they have to charge sales tax on internet purchases now, why dont they just charge you the tax when you make the purchases?

The laws have changed regarding taxes from one state to another.

They should have charged the tax at the time of sale. Is the form for claiming it as taxes paid?

Hopefully you can read this.

I purchased from them a few days ago. I had to pay taxes at time of purchase. First time I ever had to do that. RRR is correct, the laws have changed recently.

I have to charge tax now on any of my received paypals in PA under the business now! Going to suck for last year figuring it out!

Probably start getting something similar from Ebay, too.

Finally something Oregon is good for. No state sales tax. Technically if you live in a non sales tax state you can show your state id and be exempt from paying a sales tax if your purchasing in a state that has a sales tax. That said, anytime I have tried that in a sales tax state, 99% of the time the persons working the cash register is unaware of this law and thinks they are being scammed. Cant say I blame them, if they aren't made aware of this by their employer I would think it is a scam as well. So I don't even bother with trying to get it, it's not worth the .82 I save on a tank of gas passing through.

I guess gone are the days of buying online and saving a few bucks on the tax
Minnesota started collecting a couple of years ago.

Kinda weird paying Colorado sales tax when the stuff was bought in Ohio (or whichever state it came from).

If I walk into a store in Ohio, they don't collect Michigan sales tax.
Don't look for logic, just greed.

Do you have anything to back up this claim? When I travel, I get to pay sales tax in whatever state has sales tax. After all, you did buy something in that state while standing at the register. Those people don't pay their state sales tax when visiting states that don't have sales tax. Income tax you can keep if you are a non resident working in a different state. Example, my Texas co-workers get their state income taxes back if they didn't work a full year when they get hired. I'd love to see the sales tax rules applied in person, watch the cashier's head explode!

Its been years since I even brought it up to a cashier. But I can tell you the way I even learned it existed was from a cashier in Washington state when I was paying for a six pack of beer and she asked for my i.d, when she saw it was an Oregon liscence she said "oh your from a non sales tax state, you don't pay a sales tax" same thing when my wife was buying clothes at the mall in Washington and used her debit card and when they asked for i.d they said. "Oh, let me have the manager remove the sales tax, your an Oregon resident" so, that's as much backing as I can give you is from personal experience.

I looked up the info on it. It says I'm exempt in some states, but not all. In California I would have to pay the sales tax, but Washington state I'd be exempt. As crazy as it sounds, it's on a state by state deal. Oregon and Washington are considered sister states. What one does, the other does. One hand washes the other essentially.

The amount collected versus the sheer clusterfuckitude is not going to justify this.

But they'll do it anyway.

Does this country got a reset button hiding somewhere?

I'm in a state that taxes my farts, and just about everything else, but not clothes. :realcrazy:

If you dont give the seller your social security or corporate tax number how can they prove that you ordered/received the goods?

My buddy told me that he has a friend that sells the heck out of BMW parts online. Uses PayPal for the transaction, pays the fees to use it. Then they sent his financial info to the IRS, who then in turn sent him a taxes owed statement based on that. It was in the several thousands range my buddy said. Said anything over a certain amount they have to report on.

Internet lost it’s charm.

Going to the local store again may re-surface!
