They were wrong and he should have declined before they did!

It’s a big mess If the seller/reseller does not understand what the law states. Consumers beware!

You or any internet consumer should not have to worry about this, it is the licensed seller/resellers job too! Sending a tax statement at the end of the year because they wanted to offer something the cheapest to attract your business does not cut it.

Good thing it does not apply to person to person sales here!

Edit! Course that is subject to change as well!

Ya, buyers were supposed to have been reporting use tax to their state all along but the states would have had difficulty dealing with each individual. Once they could put the work on sellers like Summit, and others, they took a tough stance to collect.

if it took me past retirement to finally find one thing the state I was living in was good for I probably would have left a long time ago... after living in near every corner of the United States and in the middle I couldn't imagine myself anywhere else.,..
 
Don't worry about what happened in 2018. Your state isn't going to come after you for payment. Yet.

States do not have the resources to collect these back sales taxes.

Right now, Summit, et al, is just covering their asses.
