You never know when something will happen to you that will humble you to your bones.

Yesterday I was sitting in my truck waiting to get loaded at a dock. I was in Rudolph, WI home to Dick Trickle "The winningest short track driver in America" (72 feature wins in 1972). I was just thinking about the Trickle Memorial that will be dedicated in his honor in three weeks. He passed a few years ago.

So here I am within a stone's throw of the memorial site... and I'm reminicing about how I snuck a few beers to Dick after one of his runs at Capital Super Speedway where I used to work (we were out of Coors at the beer stand so I poured a Pabst into a Coors can since he was sponsored by Coors) and I get a 'ping' on my phone... new message.

It's from a guy I never heard of... he sez he's on the nominating commitee for the Luxemburg Speedway Hall of Fame. He ASKED if I would accept their nomination for induction into the speedway's Hall of Fame!

I was floored!

I promoted the speedway in '83 and '84... took it from a delapidated, non operating joint to one of the most popular venues in the state.

I left after two years. Let's just say it was time for a change after six years of working in the biz. I had a new wife and a new life and i was just plain tired.

So... I accepted. I'll be inducted along with four other folks... one of which is a former driver and one of my early supporters of the track.

Set for May 31st... only my second time back at the track since I left. i was invited to an Old Timers Night, too a few years ago.

I'm so very humbled. Maybe Dick Trickle was saying "thanks" for the beer....

I’m pretty young to remember Dick but my dad’s favorite driver was Dick Trickle and I heard all about him and how he used to race here in MN at the state fairgrounds....cool story....BTW, my dad’s a member here @FISHYPETE and his fav beer is Pabst lol....again, very cool story and that’s awesome!!

Kinda funny when I handed Dick a Coors and he took a sip said 'That tastes familiar"... he was sponsored by Pabst for years.

Congrats, and it sounded like you really deserve that nomination. I wish our speedway could have been saved by someone like yourself! The New Asheville Speedway was an awesome asphalt short track. The City of Asheville, and some greenies hatched a scheme to buy the track, and turn it into a big greenway/park. The track was for sale by the former owner, and the greenies had some guy outbid the people that were going to buy it. They even had a large donation from Robin Williams, toward their cause while he was here filming Patch Adams. By the time it came to light that the guy that bought it and "donated" it to Riverlink was just a ruse, it was too late to do anything about it. Dick Trickle raced at NAS once while he was running Winston Cup. Congrats again on your nomination.

It is truly these 'out of the blue ' recognitions that make doing the right thing and working hard worth while.

It’s amazing what passing a few beers will do for you. ;)
