I decided to give this a try after a lot of debate. I was looking for something that would hold up better than just paint. I gave it a shot and really pleased on how it turned out. Check out the pics and let me know what you think.
Dont worry, its just a plain jane 318 car im cloning to a 72 340.
This was done with UPOL Raptor liner.

Looks good. I may try it. A little more details please? primers, colors, or whatever else you did. thanks

Looks good. I was always wanting to try that raptor liner on my lower quarters of my truck...even contemplated replacing a vinyl top with it on my old b body.

The entire trunk area was blasted to bare metal and treated with ospho. The flat part of the quarter panels were sanded, not blasted for fear of warpage. Then it got two medium coats of buff 2k primer. After letting the primer cure for a couple weeks it got a good scuff over the entire trunk area before applying the bed liner. Be sure to wipe everything down good after scuffing.
When spraying the liner be sure to do all the hard to reach areas first. There are some really tough areas to get to so before spraying you might want to do a mock spray to identify what kind of angles you will have to position yourself in to spray. I sprayed all the nooks first and then the underside and worked my way to the center, doing the tire well last.
Conditions that day were about 80° low humidity. I used the schutz gun that came with the raptor kit. After shooting some tests I found that around 30 psi yielded the best results. You can choose what type of texture you end up with by changing the air pressure and distance you hold the gun. Higher pressure and closer spray tends to give you a smoother finish. If you spray too thick it will lay down smooth on you as well. Its best to do light coats and let it flash for a bit and come back to it. If you find it does not have the texture you want you can wait about 30 minutes and hit it with a light coat from about 18" back.
One thing to watch out for is drips from the gun vent. If you turn the gun too much it will run out and drop a blob. Also wipe the tip of the gun off occasionally because it will build up and could drop off in your work. I had the cup vent drop a dime size blob right at the end of spraying. I gently smoothed it over with a paper towell, let it flash and came back with a quick spray to get the texture back. Worked like a champ.
Overall I was very happy with the results. I am not a painter by any means so I think most anyone can do this and get decent results as long as your prep work in good.
Btw, I bought the liner kit on ebay and just went with the tint they provided. It only said lime green. Its a little brighter than the color im going with on the rest of the car but for the trunk its close enough. You can tint this stuff to color match any paint code.

I have seen a bunch of posts where people talk about using this instead of a vinyl top. I dont think I would do it. From what I have seen with bed liners is they all fade and chalk over time. The tinted ones seem to fade and chalk even faster than the black.
I think this stuff would be great on the bottom side of the car.

I used black Monstaliner in my trunk over Rust-Oleum red primer that I scuffed up with a pad. Monstaliner claims to never fade like other products. I used two coats with the supplied textured roller a few hours apart. I did this with the trunk lid removed.

The day after application, the vehicle was parked outside in the sun and the product began to bubble up in a few areas (It takes about a week to dry fully). Don't know where I went wrong and don't know yet if only the second coat lifted from the first coat or if the first coat lifted from the primer. Someday I will peel it off in a section that lifted and see what happened. Expensive stuff but the color and texture looked good after application.

May have been solvent pop that caused the bubbling. I would have kept it out of direct sunlight until fully cured. Did you give the base proper time to cure before putting on the liner?

I used UPol Raptor liner in my wheel houses and inside quarter panels. The stuff is very durable and cured quickly. The kit I bought came with the 2 part liner and a spray gun. I think they sell tintable too.

Man that stuff is so much heavier than paint, car probably lost 2 tenths in the 1/4 just from the extra weight:poke:

Someone put something like that in the trunk of my scamp.I dont know the product or when it was applied but it is a sticky gooey mess right now.I'll need to figure out a way to get rid of it.

It was probably just rubberized undercoating in the spray can from the parts store. It never fully hardens and is not what you want to be using in this application. Upol raptor is a 2k catalyzed product that will cure hard.
Btw, regular rustolem paint can take months to completely dry. Especially if its put on thick. I like their rusty metal primer but you have to give it plenty of drying time.

Same thing here.
I agree what a mess.
I think its going to take a lot of hard work and time to get that crap out of the trunk.
Let me know if you have any good ideas.
