are the housing ends which would be used when narrowing a housing that would "slip on" the tubing?

I see Speedmaster sells some housing ends that they say are designed to slip over the tubes. To use those, the tubes would need to be perfectly straight in order for the housing end bearing bores to align with the axle bearing bores. I've narrowed hundreds of housings over the years, i can tell you that the ends of axle tubes are rarely in alignment with the housing bearing bores, especially after you weld brackets onto the tubes. While it's possible to straighten tubes after welding on brackets, it's a huge pain in the ***.

Butt weld style ends don't rely on straight tubes for proper axle bearing alignment. Far easier to achieve bearing bore alignment by letting the tubes do what they want as you weld on brackets, then as a last step install butt weld style ends using an alignment bar.

Grant, thank-you for the explanation. It just "seemed" easier to slip them on and weld but after your description I understand why that would not be the best way to do it. Guess I was looking for quick and easy...which might end up with more headaches in the end. Thanks again! Bob

you can cut them pretty darn straight with a rotary pipe cutter. Must be free of any brackets and must be straight pipe. not tapered at all. Youll see if the carbide wheel starts tracking like a screw thread. If you use a bore bar, you can run it through the axle and use it as a jig to weld the ends as they mate with the ends of the housing.
