So I am working on a 1970 Dart GT that came with 2 speed wipers and a manual foot pump for the washer. After thinking about it I decided to get rid of the manual washer system and go to electric (fear of a malfunction dumping a quart of washer fluid in my nice freshly painted floorpan and new carpets). So I went looking for a 2 speed washer switch with the push in washer option. I found one in a bin full of salvaged wiring from other 70 Darts. The harness plugged into the switch with 2 nested plugs with a total of 6 connections, so I am assuming that this is a wiper/washer switch and indeed when you press in on the shaft it is spring loaded. Then I compared it to the switch that came with the car that had a manual washer and all the numbers are the same; 2864415 over 23199 - over a bit is another stamped number 2939 on one and 0698 on the other. When I press on the shaft of the manual pump switch, it's spring loaded too! So is there only one switch for 2 speed wipers that has provisions for an electric washer, and the manual pump ones just weren't hooked up at the reservoir???

I dont believe any of the 2 speed wiper switches have a washer function. It feels that way with the internal spring that's there for the contacts inside the switch, but they are not equipped that way. With Chrysler though as you are probably aware, anything is possible (insert eyeroll here). You can do what I am going to do on my sons car. Get a washer reservoir with an electric pump. Pin the pump wire at the firewall connection used for an electric pump as per your wiring schematic. The second pump wire is grounded with a ring terminal to the washer reservoir mount screw. Pico wiring sells the packard 56 connectors and I believe it's either a 14 or 16 gage brown wire. Then run it down to where the foot pump goes to a momentary contact switch then up into the fuse box. Then you have an electric pump that uses the foot pedal to operate.

Heres pix. I am using a momentary contact switch you would use for a race car or run stand. The foot pump bracket was modified to house the switch. Remove the cup, open up the mount bracket, flip the cup over and tack weld it from the underside. I didnt even have to open the hole bigger for the switch. The switch I got off evilbay for about $5. In the last 2 pix, you can see the switch height is the same height as the foot pump, and theres enough clearance for wiring under it without ground short issues to the car body. Bracket will eventually be painted black. It's primered in leftover out of date aircraft epoxy primer.

Hope this helps
Matt

My 74 Duster has a 2 speed wiper setup and electric washer motor, so they must be able to work together.

Then maybe the 72 up had this. I am unaware it existed. It plugging this into a 1970, the pin out on the switch may be different, or in such a way that a 72 switch may not physically plug into a 70 wiring plug.

All it is, is an extra contact on the switch when you push the knob in. The switch has to be manufactured this way. DionR, I would love to have the part number of that 72 switch to you have in your car. If you can get the part number and post it here, that would be great. I have tried to archive the different year switch part numbers, but chrysler seems to have made a lot of yearly changes on these damn things for whatever reason.

No idea what year mine is, been 25+ years since I got it back on the road and no idea if it has been swapped since. Dash is coming out soon enough though so I will get the number off it when I can.

Cool thank you. I have several 2 speed switches. Non have a wipe wash, I also have several 3 and V speed switches. None are for sale as neither car is together, and I would hate to sell off the one I end up needing.

Matt, does your 2 speed switch for the mechanical foot pump have 6 electrical connection on the back? I just can't figure out what 6 connections would be used for on a switch that didn't power a washer. This is the same number of connections on the back of my electric washer /variable speed switch for one of my other 70 Darts.

Wouldn’t it be easier to adapt a 3 speed wiper switch to your 2 speed harness? This way you have the push feature of the switch to operate the pump?

The only difference between the 2 and 3 speed switch plug is 1 extra wire for the washer. They both plug in exactly the same. At least on the 1969 it's like this. Not sure on 1970

As a matter of fact the 69 harness has the dk brown washer pump wire already in the wiper switch plug. If you use a 2 speed wiper switch, theres no spade on the switch for this function the wire is in the plug connected to nothing. The 3 speed and V speed switches plug in the same, and have an extra spade that lines up with the dk brown wire.

This brown wire goes to the firewall bulkhead connector. The corresponding outside bulkhead connector it goes right to the washer pump, then pump motor to washer tank mounting screw as a ground. If you have a V speed or 3 speed this wire is getting its switched power from the switch itself.

Sorry about the delay. Switch number is 3488764 and 23199. It has 6 plugs on the back and 3 positions in addition to off. When I push on it, it moves in and out and turns the switch to the first position.

I know I don't have the 3 speed wiper motor, so not sure what the 3 positions in the switch would do, other than I have never had an issue with how it works. Could be that position one is slow and position 2 is fast and I never tried position 3 because I didn't have a wiper motor to use it and was pretty much unaware it was there.

I checked my FSM and it doesn't appear that there was an option for an electric washer motor with the 2 speed wiper switch.

Pretty sure my car didn't come from the factory like this, I think someone added the switch and electric pump (probably me years ago). No idea why it works at all.

I should add that the FSM doesn't show a different plug at the switch for a 2 speed or 3 speed wiper motor. The 4 wires going to the motor might be used differently, but they are all wired the same regardless of which motor it goes to.

differing voltage (that results in different motor speeds) is in the switch for 3 speed/variable speed switches and motors. 2 speed switch puts out the same voltage in both positions but it goes to different wires - High speed straight to motor, low speed through the ballast resistor on the outside of the motor and that is where the voltage control is (in the resistor, not the switch). If you use a 3 speed switch on a 2 speed motor and use the ballast resistor, I would think there would be a double voltage drop (very low speed?).

Seemed to work fine. I would have thought I would have noticed if it didn’t work right. I thought it was a 2 speed switch.

You have made the same mistake that everybody has made at one time or another. The number stamped on a part is not always the part catalog number. 3621670 is the 3 speed switch that was used on A bodies from 1972 to 1976. Yes it does have the number 3488764 stamped on it.

I am seeing that all '75 and '76 A-Bodies had electric windshield washers, even one's with a 2 speed wiper? Buddy has a '76 parts car he picked up and it has a switch that pushes in and springs to the first detent, only has 3 detents total (off/slow/fast) and has the electric washer bottle.

Looks like P/N 3746851?
