Ignition setup recommendations

Buddy has a boat out at Colorado River. Some big power boats out there sometimes....ran across a stalled out 'hot rod boat' and the guy asked if he had a spare MSD 6 box. He didn't but the 3rd boat that passed them did! Most pack spares.....for some reason..
:rofl::rofl::rofl:

iceignition.com I have no experience with them or do I know much about racing ignitions but they do get great reviews. As far as I can tell just about anything out of Australia is pretty good stuff.

Checked them out. Stuff looks good and they're mighty proud of them by the prices.

Oz seems to really be still on the advancement of Petrol motors. Remember the "negative supercharging" hype? A strangely tuned set of headers and a special cam that boasted such cylinder scavenging that it was like forced induction from the exhaust side. Whatever happened to that? Someone was supposed to do a dyno test and probably found that it wasnt worth their time.

well there seems to be at least 2 Mallory 690 part numbers...There is this

And then there is THIS! The High and Mighty 690! Maybe a 690 with a rev limiter and RPM switch base? That's mounted on whats left of the the old battery tray, fits great! Most I see have the matching Mallory "cast fin" style coil.

The REAL 690 box is the big mother humper. That other 690 is an MSD made POS.

Still having my cutting out problem. Chased wires front to back, can’t find anything wrong. It’s either the ignition setup is bad, or something out of whack in the fuel system. The latter seems improbable since it’s just a mechanical pump, a barrel valve and jets.

If you want, you can send me your box and coil and I will test it on my machine and see what happens. You can send the distributor too if you want.

Pay the freight both ways and I’ll do the rest for free.

I’ll take it off this week, and send the whole setup plus the other box that was bad. Pm me the address.

I just can’t understand it. If I leave off the foot brake it still cuts out, but just once. On the transbrake it’s 3 times very violently. On regular asphalt it doesn’t do it at all since the tires spin a bit. It’s obviously something that is effected by shock. I’ve chased every wire, disconnected my shift box, unhooked the tach, turned the rpm limiters all the way up, fattened and leaned the fuel. If it was fuel or ignition you’d think it would happen every time, and at more than just the starting line. Totally baffled.

I don’t get it either. I’ve told this story before but it’s worth repeating.

I forget the year but Woodburn dragstrip used to host an event they called the “Pro Stock Invitational”. It was a KILLER show. Anyway, the guys coming up from Sonoma could stop at Woodburn and on Tuesday (I think it was a Tuesday-Wednesday deal) they could make as many test passes as they wanted..and most of them made a bunch. Then on Wednesday they ran a Chicago style shoot out for the money. Great show. If they still did it, I’d drag my fat self over there for both days with spare pain dope just to make it through the 2 days.

Anyway, I showed up down there and I would stand on the starting line for almost every pass they made. You’d be surprised what people say up there. And if your not an idiot they will say things up there they may not say in the pits. One team had a serious miss. Didn’t do it in the burnout, or on the 2 step. It had a miss that started at about 7200 and missed until about 8000 RPM. I forget how many passes they made that day, but it was at least 12. They tried everything. Since I was up there every run I heard a lot of what was said. So in between runs I ride over to their pits and watch what they were doing and then they would BS with me. The crew chief and I kinda hit it off and since it was Tuesday they were much more open and loose. The crew chief was driving because the car owner couldn’t be there.

When I left that night, they didn’t have a clue what to do. They changed everything on the car. And somethings twice and it still missed. And it would go in and out of the miss. It was crazy.

When I got there the next day they were ready to make a test pass before the car owner got there. I’m on the starting line and he drops the hammer and it went right down the track and didn’t miss a beat. In fact, it was within a tenth of the fastest pass of the race that far.

I rode over to their pits to see what they did. I asked the Crew Chief how they fixed it and he I don’t have a clue. We have no idea what was bad. Me being the curious type I said what did you change to fix it? Did it just stop missing on its own?? He laughed and said walk behind the trailer and have a look.

They pulled every single wire out of the car. Every connector. All of it. And they retired the entire car. I walked back and he said somewhere in that pile of wires is the issue. If you want to look for it, be my guest but we don’t have the time. Nor do we care.

I hate wiring so I would never have seen anything wrong if it bit me in the face. But they fixed it.

The point of all this is that even the best in the business have stuff happen to them that they can’t explain. I have no clue what’s happening with your stuff, but maybe we can rule out the box and coil. Or maybe not!!! Electricity is a pesky taskmaster.

PM incoming...

@yellow rose Here’s the rods and crank I have. Shipping the crank will be a little more involved.

Can I Eliminate my ballast resistor, and just hook the wires together? It’s the two connection type.
