Went to the post office this morning to send out a small priority flat rate box to Alaska.

Come to find out the USPS has raised their rates since in was in last, only no longer than 2 weeks ago.

New rates, for their Priority Mail box's.
Small flat rate box $9.20
Medium flat rate box $16.25
Large flat rate box $22.65

Now even trying to mail out small items, is getting cost prohibitive in trying to sell parts, when mailing has to be figured in.
And i can remember when i was a kid, and stamps for an envelope was .04 cents.

This was the reason I silently bowed out of smoking cheese for anyone last year. I smoked 2 pounds of cheese, shipped it to PA in a medium flat rate box. Shipping was just about double what the cheese cost.

Gone nuts. Cost me $108US to have a small box shipped to me from Doctor Diff and another $66US on top for the drop ship on the 2pc rear axle brake lines Cass had The Right Stuff send me (and then they sent plain steel vs the stainless I ordered!). Only good was I had ZERO issues getting Cass to refund me $45US.

It's not like they just suddenly upped the rates. A rate increase has to go thru congress 1st, and it's published months in advance.
As for $22.65 for a large flat rate box, I sure as hell can't buy gas, and drive across country for that.
It's still cheaper than the alternative.

58 cents for a stamp seems like a lot compared to the nickle a stamp cost back in the early 60's. He'll, that was a half century ago. I can't start my truck and drive across town for 58 cents.

10% cheaper if you buy them online, and then you don’t have to go to the post office and stand in line.

and print labels online
even schedule for a free pick up
just put the outgoing box in your mailbox, pop up the flag and bob's yer uncle

I just bought 1g rounds of cci 9mm fmj for 358.99 the total after shipping and tax was 416.78.The shipping went up!

You are lucky you are still getting 'service'. USPS has suspended air mail to many countries because of covid [ lack of planes in the air I guess ], including Australia.
Didn't bother to inform the sender or the receiver. Been waiting 5 weeks now from parts from Tenn. Tracking # just says 'in transit'. Could be coming by canoe for all that tells you.

Then at your side of the world, is Australia postal service sending mail out of the country?

If they didn't zigzag with your mail and pass your area multiple times before finally settling in where it's supposed to be maybe they wouldn't have to raise prices. You ever watch where a tracked package goes between point a and point b?
I'm about an hour out of Chicago. If I order a package from the west it passes me up and ends up in Indianapolis or even farther away before heading back here. If they would drop the packages off on the way instead of carrying them 2-3 times farther than they need to , rates would go down. I'm not saying door to door on the way thru, but if someone sends me something from GA don't send it to Minneapolis then back to Chicago then to Champaign then here.... It's not uncommon to see stuff track and pass me twice on the way here.

They keep raising prices and reducing services and still lose money.
Just close the doors and turn off the lights and turn it over to a company that is held accountable for profitability and service. ( I know Fedex and UPS haven't done such a great job lately either, but USPS has been loosing money for as long as I can remember. That's tax payers money.)

Yes and if they didn't have to pay a living wage and offer their employee's benefits like medical and retirement they could make money. The average salary is $58,000 a year. Average for a UPS driver is $88,000 a year. Apparently the Postal Service doesn't charge enough for their services.

USPS might be a little fat on employees and management. (Bloated)

I don't know all the details on the USPS through put rate, but I can tell you this.
I worked in a UPS sort center as a summer job while going to college (in the 80')
Everyone was moving with a purpose, everyone!
You either kept up or you were walking down the road talking to yourself........

I can't send a box without going to the post office or annex....? Must check box or answer hazardous material queations at post office. check out UPS simple rate online only. Goes by cc instead of weight. can ship a head cheap. Must print label and drop off at UPS. not hard for me as its .5 miles away.

I bought a 4 speed hump off FBBO member. Conformed it has gone from NJ to NY in 15 days!!!! At that rate it will arrive here in Tx next May or June?? Yes USPS is effecient!!!! A bargain! Yea right!!

In order to do what your doing, don't you have to set yourself up with the USPS and open an account with them?
Sounds like that works ok for you, but for an occasional user of the USPS it's not worth it, and you just go to your local post office when the need arises, to mail something out.

Correct
The account set up was free, and I ship things maybe once every other month

I can get USPS boxes drop shipped to my house all the time and I even have a USPS account to get scans of letter that are arriving but I cant just give George, my mail man a box with $17 in stamps on it to be mailed. I have to go to the post office and the clerk has to enter the address into the machine to print out a printed address sticker along with the weighed rate I paid and then I have to hit the button confirming the address and stating that there is no hazardous material in the box (lipo battery, gunpowder, caustics, etc). Even the Kiosk can do this but I have to state it with a button. Times have changed.

My work ships the bulk of our orders via FedEx ground.
When figuring transportation costs for the quotes and orders I process I've found that with our discount, FedEx ground is usually less expensive than USPS priority mail...and more reliable.

Then you mail things, less often than i do.

I looked at the USPS web site, for sending things out from your home.
I think it works well, if you doing flat rate, priority mail box's.
It's complicated if you want to mail regular packages of various sizes and weight's.
Then you have to buy an accurate scale to weigh packages, then figure what it's going to cost, from point a, to point b, on their web site, by size, and weight.
And set up the USPS web site accordingly, with your needs.
For a bulk mailer, i think that works great, but for me, it just won't pencil out in the long run, to do anything like that.
