So I pick up a 72 duster and it had 5.5 bolt wheels on it got to looking and found it’s a 8.25 rear end but when I pulled of wheels it had an adapter on it and it is small pattern I thought all 8.25 where big pattern. So my question is can I change axels and drums

usually all 8 1/4 darts were 4.5(1973 up), but 1972 was the last year for the 8 3/4, so apparently never say never on a mopar.

Well that’s embarrassing I need my eyes checked after looking closer and my rear axle spotters guide I see it better we’ll time for and upgrade sorry for the time wasted thanks you

That’s not all. They make a Hybrid BBP 7 1/4” that looks like a 8 1/4” kinda. That threw me for a loop.

All 8 1/4" car axles were large pattern. They all also had 3" axle tubes.

Anybody working on an early A needs to consider solving the rear end problem immediately. A heavy duty rearend is only half the solution. A minitub to fit bigger tires is almost always a must if you want to take advantage of off the line power. So; just a hot motor and trans won't usually get you where you want to be.

^^^^^^ what he said^^^^^^^^
I learned that in 1971/72 when I stuffed G60-14s into the stock tubs of my 70Swinger, and custom-built slapper bars; and instantly started stomping all other stock small-block comers, lol, with a totally stock 340. And some hopped-up ones too...... Yee-Haw.
Man that pissed off a lotta my high-school classmates.
Next stop; 4.10s
I was 18 and on the top of the World!
I have a 68 Barracuda now, and have been able to stuff 325/50-15 BFG, Drag-Radials (on 10s) into the stock tubs , and the car is slightly lowered. As long as I take it easy on the turns, I mean drive normally, I won't get any rubbing. BUT, For anything goes, I have a set of 295/50-15s also on 10s.
I only had to move the springs over, and I narrowed the rear end to be able to use a 4.5backspace; which is a common size for 10s

Ima thinking the 72 Duster has the same or similar tubs.

Really? And "all" you had to do was move the springs over and narrow the rearend?...There's $3k right there.

Oh com'on,
the offset hangers were peanuts.
and Moser did the narrowing for a few bucks. (So little, I can't even remember how much.)
I set the perches up, tacked them in, then had a welder friend run the beads This was so easy. Whatever I spent, it beat the heck out of running 275s. I paid more for the used 15X10 kidney slot mags.
Money well spent.
But still not enough traction for street tires on the street. But at least I have sideways traction now, and she doesn't spin out anymore. Which was the big push to get it done. Spinning out in traffic was the last straw.

Thanks for the great info. Looks like Mancini is now a close friend ordered the mini tubs the spring relocation kit brake lines super stock springs shocks and all needed parts to mnt 8.75 with sure grip 4.10 and and big brakes when all that is in I will start on front suspension I am a firm believer in doing all suspension and brake upgrades because what good is power if you can’t control it or stop
