Ford engine question.

-
This is one of 5 engines my brother builds. DFV, BGA, BDG, Lotus Twin Cam, Hart 420 and BMW M12’s for vintage racing. So yeah, I’ve stripped down a few DFV’s and a ton of BDA/ BDG, Lotus TC. He worked for the main company in the US that builds DFV’s and restores vintage F1 cars. Now he has his own shop running these cars building motors...

Very cool.

We have several customers that own and operate vintage race cars. My uncle has been in road racing for close to 30 years and owns Geoff Brabhams 1981 Championship winning Can AM car. I have painted several formula one cars along with many others. I did a set of wheels for a Ferrari 512 last week.

debateable...are you running 8000 RPM NASCAR? Its a velocity issue but with a logical build, they can work great. They are worth some $$, sounds like a gnarly Mach! shoot a pic of that LB33 intake, could be rare.

Not the best picture but this is what he sent tonight.

And the 1 piece headers DROP in with no interference! That was a great motor, mine didnt like the stock Ford starter though. went through 4 in about 6 months, all Autozone rebuilds, all replaced as found to be bad on their tester. We started testing the ones off the shelf to find one that passed. the first 2 didnt! In 1989 on the way home from Camp Pendleton, I ran it WOT against a 80's Camaro on the empty freeway and I kept up with him for about 5 miles. Not bad for a 17 foot long 3600 lb 4 door.

I knew yall were gonna make me drag these fat bastids out. This is a standard size aerosol paint can top.

The 429 Super Cobra Jet heads will probably fit a tennis ball in the ports.

There is always the Ford 4 valve Coyote motor....460/420ft-lbs at 7000 rpm. All from a 5.0. Not too bad. Wonder what that indy motor put out?

465 HP and 332 TQ, spun up to 8,800 out 255 CID on menthol. It was build to last as they only run the Gurney Eagle for demos, not raced like the other vintage cars.

I remember when my asshole brother had a '71 Mach 1 Mustang with a 429 SCJ 4 speed. He pulled the motor out to do a basic rebuild when I was about 13. Those intake ports are just huge.
I've always liked how Ford did it. A lot of their four barrel engines were different right down to the pistons. BIG ports, BIG valves, more compression. What I never got was why they used RETARDED camshaft timing. "I GUESS" they were fighting emissions. Had they just ground advance in their cams through the muscle car era, they'd given Chrysler a run for the money. I've said as long as I can remember the Cleveland couldda been a Hemi killer.....and it's true. The small block that couldda beat up a Hemi.

Then there's the 427 Tunnel Port heads.

Of course we all know what this is.......

<~~~~~ Sees a set of injector stacks sticking up out of a Flat Bottom ski boat in the furthest lane at his gas station from his comfy stool in the shade in lovely Barstow Ca. "Got to go see what's under those injectors!" and off he went. He gets to the last row of pumps and freezes in shock and awe.

He stayed there staring as the customer got out of his pickup and walked towards him. "When you're done taking that in, would you fill the truck with premium please?". "Where did you get that?" he asked. "Holman and Moody" the customer replied. He almost wet himself. He fueled the pickup and quickly washed the windshield so he could wait next to it for the customer's return.

Yeah Fords ,whan I was young and even now arent "cheap" I leared early that you just couldnt take a Fiord and bolt things on and get any real performance for cheap. I am talking "Pre" 5.0 fuel Injetion in the 80s. It was like if you had a dog 302, it was a dog 302 no matter what you did. Nopt like a chevy where you could swap heads, cam etc fairly cheaply. The right Mopar engine was always best bang for the buck, and a fast Ford was expensive :)

I just built some 4 barrel heads at work, nice heads.

My old man picked up a 73 Mach 1 with a 351 Cleveland. We have no idea if it’s the original motor or what really has been done to it. Here are the details I can confirm.

-650 cfm Holley DP with no mechanical secondaries or choke.
-Performer intake
-full msd ignition (not sure if part numbers)
-comp cam hydraulic roller
270 duration intake and exhaust
224 duration at .050
.519 lift
-heads appear to be factory but don’t know what size valves or if they had any work.
-1 3/4 hooker headers

I know without the info on the heads this is really a shot in the dark but what would be a good HP and TQ estimate.
Didn’t know boat anchors had horsepower or torque
