Im fabing a pitman arm puller for large trucks. Guy I know had a homemade one that he said worked great, so he knows what he wants. He told me use a one inch nut with a threaded bolt but im not sure to go with a coarse thread or fine.....Takes a lot to get one of those arms off........Any opinions?

Fine gives you more "thrust" with a given amount of torque, but that does not mean you won't tear it up. I would lean towards fine thread.

Thanks, I was leaning towards fine threads
I was thinking of using a 3/4 inch top plate and drill and taping it....Have to hit the salvage yard for a SAE threaded bolt or rod now

There is places like A@N fasteners that sell Grd8 stuff down here. Way less than Ace Grd 8. I've used em quite a few times over the years

fwiw IF you want a very durable puller i have made a few for pulling couplings of of boat shafts i use class 12.9 or grade 12 one inch fine thread and i weld a double long nut on the puller , if you use oil on the threads it will last a long time .

If it is a split style pitman arm just drive a chisel into the split to spread it and it will slide right off.
Im not sure if its split type, these are large dump trucks and heavy spec tractors
I asked how they just removed a pitman arm that the steering box was replaced and the mechanic used wedges between the box and arm. Not the best way to remove it im guessing

Most are split but Shepard gears are held on by an Allen head bolt with a lock plate with a bendable tab. I don't recall if they needed a puller or not, last I worked on HD stuff was 2012.

A lot of HD class 8 trucks like dump trucks have 2 steering boxes left and right the right box is a slave box with no input shaft it's controlled via the pressure hoses run to the left box.

OTC has some Heavy duty Pittman arm pullers.

Man, I got a Whoopass black hardened one from Napa, and I've popped an OTC before, but not sure How HD it was... I also have a habit of destroying rental tools as well.. some of the old Mopars I've worked on just are Stubborn! Even w/ a Lil heat. And I don't think heat and FT end parts go together
