Getting ready to put a tach in my car. Thinking about putting it on the steering column.

Where did you put yours?

Any help appreciated.

I mounted mine to the left side of the steering column.. I actually had it on the other side first.. but because its column shift the tach was up in front of the speedo... the bugged me... so now its on the left.. its a little too low for most people, but I like it there...

I started with cardboard and worked my way up to aluminum. I eliminated the drivers defroster vent and came up with this....
Barracuda350-vi.jpg

I know.... I look pissed. Just a bad picture.

Here's the top of the final piece. I used a 1/8" thick piece of steel that I cut, bent, and drilled for my tach mount. I also welded on the mounting sleeve.

From the bottom you can see one of the eventual two rubber mount blocks. This keeps it from vibrating, like those thin stainless steel pieces that slide under the dash pad. My tach bounced around like crazy when I tried using one. This is nice and solid.

Once installed I was able to route the tach wiring directly under the dash by leaving a gap where the tack bracket bolts to the defroster opening. There's a 3/8" gap that allows the wiring to slip inside the dash. A short section of braided harness sleeve keeps it clean and simple.

Once I got the car together, it looks and works great. It's super solid, doesn't move at all, and I can un-bolt it and have a mint dash pad and re-install that left defroster vent and no one would ever know.....

Hope this helps!

I don't have mine mounted in the Barracuda yet, but here is where I had it mounted on the column in the Duster. I just used a big hose clamp.

John, Your 'Cuda looks great!

Love that shifter...looks like what we called a "Nascar" shifter
years ago.

I couldnt decide so I have TWO tachs..lol...one seemlessly integrated into my custom dash, the other (Sunpro Super Tach III) sitting on my console. I just like the look of console mounted tachs, but the dash would have looked bare without one too! Maybe I'll get rid of the console tach, maybe not.....

Tony: That's pretty awesome. Long term, I'm doing that.

I'd like to do something like Dougie has for now but I've got this PITA rimblow wheel column adapter thing and I don't know if there's going to be room. So Long term may come along sooner than I think.

Mounted mine under the dash above the console. I don't watch it too close so
it doesn't need to be in plain site. toolmanmike

Whatever tach you do get make sure it has a shift light. Mines set at 6500 rpms and it stays on once it hits that rpm or goes higher.

So its harder to blow your engine...if you have the light on in high gear and the motor throws a rod (happen to me in 2001) well you can't say you had no warning.

The Tach in my Scamp, Auto Meter, It's been there since 1992 ! Some people give me a hard time cause it's so far out of the line of sight, but when you've had a car this long, you know exactly what 6000 RPM sounds like!

here is mine. its not a very good picture. but you get the idea. i had a moon tach. but it didnt work right out of the box and they would not warranty it. so now i have an autometer. anyone that is looking at getting the moon tach, its a made in taiwan piece of junk. i hope i can save someone else from waisting their money on one.

That new Autometer Tach is F'n sweet. I've thought for a long time someone needed to make an old school horizontal tach.

I just installed this tach, I made a bracket to fit the contours of the lower dash, its bolts on to the under lip and the tach bolts on,

Here's the tach instructions you needed. toolmanmike

I am thinking I would like to try something like this in my notch.
I built it from scratch using Autometer gauges for my Comet.
Please don't flame me because it's not Mopar!

I put the tach under the dash due to lack of bracketry to mount on the dash, but I did mount the remote shift light on the steering column.
