When working on fiberglass I have used pickle juice to get it off my hands.

What I have done is pull all the plugs and use the starter to spin the engine until oil pressure comes up. Removing any compression makes it easy & using the starter will get oil pressure up quickly without damaging the engine.

Just god done talking with a buddy that has a VW. His high pressure pump failed as well. He rebuilt his for $300. Wasn't hard to do and easy to get to as well.
