Edelbrock carbs will generously flood with fuel under as little as 7.1 pounds of pressure. This would cause the car to idle poorly, especially under load and will smooth out and behave once RPMs are higher and the bowls are not allowed a chance to fill up...
Simple test:
start the vehicle...
between the comments about re-tightening your intake, the low vac, and the white smoke, I would say you should pull that bugger and put some new gaskets in properly before something major gets damaged. also, have you checked your oil for water?
for testing purposes you can run the ign + to coil + through the spare you have while leaving the ecu plugged into the old one. a little more simple to just rig a jumper for now to see if thats your issue and if it is, just buy a new resistor
