WHICH brake spring pliers for the job?

Well.... I did it (I should say, my wife and I did it) She brought home a set of brake spring pliers-Wrong tool for those little hold-down springs. Fortunately, I had fashioned a tool (using THICK coat hanger type wire, I made a simple hook with a crude handle- Hooked the spring through the...

WHICH brake spring pliers for the job?

Actually, it was "yooper822" who had the picture, so I'm hoping he knows what the deal is with the proper tool. I added him to my Yahoo messenger list, so if he responds all will be well....right? RIGHT?:-?

WHICH brake spring pliers for the job?

No problem. Thanks for trying!! There are two of us that have these weird spring hold downs and we need help. ((I foolishly went and tore my left front brake down, and now I can't get it assembled again, Thought I knew what I was doing!!))

    64 Front drum kit incomplete?

Go to the thread I started a few minutes ago, called Which brake spring plier tool? (or something) WE are trying to figure this out over there!!

WHICH brake spring pliers for the job?

The black thing's the spring, and the little clip is there too.

WHICH brake spring pliers for the job?

Yes, but NOT like you have pictured there, these are actual springs, fatter on one end, with a hook on the narrower end that attaches to a little clip with a hole in it from the back. (I'll try to find a picture...)

WHICH brake spring pliers for the job?

I'm doing the front drums on my 64 Dart, and I need to know which tool to use to install the hold-down springs- These are not the ones with the little cap(I have THAT tool) These are springs that go through a hole in the shoe, and hook to a little square-ish clip in the back of the unit...

    64 Front drum kit incomplete?

I only wish someone had mentioned the "Brake Spring Plier" tool!! Those hold down springs are IMPOSSIBLE!! Someone's going to bring me the tool, but so much for doing the job fast! "There's FAST, CHEAP and RIGHT, and you can only have two- If you want it fast and cheap, it wont be right...

    64 Front drum kit incomplete?

Thanks to both of you. yooper (If I may call you that) that really helped. It was the "hold down springs" that were odd to me, but I can see in your photos, they are different from what I'm used to (more like the ones in memike's photos, and his shows FOUR of those, two on either side...

    64 Front drum kit incomplete?

I guess it's the right kit,:-? having looked around online, just not what I'm used to. Still, if anyone's familiar with the 64 front drum setup, or has pics, let me know what you can. Sure, once I pull the drum it should all be obvious:sign7:, I just don't want to get started and not be able...

    64 Front drum kit incomplete?

I have yet to open up my front drums and look at them, but the spring kit I bought doesn't have the hold down spring/pin/cap assembly (the one's you'd see at the three band nine o' clock positions). I've never seen a Dodge drum setup that didn't have those parts. Are the front drums somehow...

64 Dart Front Drum Removal (and more!)

Now it seems you're referring to studs that pass through the drum with holes (common on later model drum brake set-ups), as opposed to when the studs are part of the drum, and are firmly attached to the drum itself. Yes, with the pass through design (like my 74 Dart Sport rear drums), sure...

64 Dart Front Drum Removal (and more!)

All I know is, when I went to have a look at my brakes, many months back, I jacked her up, removed the tire, and figured, "a drum's a drum", (like the rears on my 74 Sport). Yet the dang drum didn't just slide off like I had expected. So I just replaced the tire and decided to worry about it...

64 Dart Front Drum Removal (and more!)

Thanks. That could turn out to be really handy. In fact, I'll go check out NAPA's site and see what I find there.

64 Dart Front Drum Removal (and more!)

Thanks. I'm sure once I have it done, or do it myself (whichever) it will all be clearer. Guess there's a reason they don'r make them that way any more! They don't, do they? No need to reply. V.D.

64 Dart Front Drum Removal (and more!)

So, if I am replacing the drums, I will have to replace the studs as well (since I don't see new drums sold with studs)??? It's weird to me that the studs are part of the drum, so to speak, and not just poked through, like the rear drums on my 74 Sport were. What sort of place do I go to...

64 Dart Front Drum Removal (and more!)

Quote A: The front drums are held on via bearings and a large nut/cotter pin etc. Quote B: The drums can be removed, to say check or replace the shoes, by removing the drum AND hub as one. Okay, Now I'm getting a picture of what's going on, and what I'll be dealing with. THANK YOU BOTH...

64 Dart Front Drum Removal (and more!)

Wow. That is odd. GREAT picture. Thanks! I doubt the drums are the originals, or if they are, they must've been off before now, but I'll have to have a look before I set about doing the job. I mean, you'd think in 45 years the brakes have been done! I don't know how hard they'll be to...

64 Dart Front Drum Removal (and more!)

Soon I will be replacing my 64 Dart's front brakes, drums and all. I have opted not to do a disc conversion kit for three reasons: 1)Cost (Like I need another reason after that!) 2)Keeping the car as close to original as I can 3)I have never had any problem with stopping power whatsoever...
