I have personally broken a Saginaw (cluster), and m21's(usually 3rd and cluster) in my 70 Nova 350...I learned how to put clutches in that car and rebuild standard trans....they are weak compared to a 833, i have abused the hell out of them behind 340's and 440's and not a problem.

The shifter plates are worn or loose? Sounds like it is going back into 1st gear after thinking about this. If you shift carefully, using a clear H pattern, does it go into 3rd?, and if you use a shove it forward at a diagonal, go back into 1st?

YOu could probably get a 3:23 in the 8 3/4, very common, still get decent gas mileage and better acceleration. 2:76 might be an option if you want even better mileage at cruise speed.

Sychro ring is probably damaged. Usually happens to 2nd or 3rd because of the amount of times it gets used. Replace with a new one when you get time.

the bottom of the bracket is about parallel with the frame.

Natural cast is the factory color or non color. Cast iron spray paint wold keep it nicer looking, though.

I don't see an attack here, just a statement of some basics. Additionally, what actually failed? Cluster gear, bearings, synchro ring, u-joint, main shaft, or did it totally seize or blow the case? I am not being mean spirited or judicial here, just looking for more info as to what occurred...

cutting every other tooth off the synchro gear(the brass one) is the oldest way to make a crash box, regardless of manufacturer. No clutch shifts at full throttle! I'm not sure if someone manufactured these synchros but it might be likely.
