Will do. Thanks again FABO brothers!

Will I need to re-ring my pistons?

Thanks for the replies. I have read that misting water from a spray bottle down the carb will "steam clean" the valves. I may give that a try and get some new seals on them. Will pull that PCV and make sure it is still in good working order. True, oil is cheaper than a rebuild, but that carbon...

Will I need to re-ring my pistons?

Probably Canadian built. The VIN and fender tag read polysphere 318. Dad bought this car back in '77. Engine is "assumed" to be original to the car. Pistons are stock replacement .040. Valve seals are umbrella style that came with OEM gasket set. PCV is original '60's Mopar and in good...

    Always somethin'!

Will I need to re-ring my pistons?

Yep, engine is original to the car. I agree, heads off, halfway home. It's getting pulled and torn down. No sense in doing all that work to find problems somewhere else. Not really what I wanted to hear, but it makes the most sense. Thanks for chiming in. How's that Valiant coming along?

Will I need to re-ring my pistons?

Does not leak or "use" coolant. I do have to add oil fairly regularly.

Will I need to re-ring my pistons?

No. It is definitely oil smoke.

Will I need to re-ring my pistons?

Yes, moly rings. I misspoke. I don't take you for an ***. You seem to know what you're talking about, and from what I've seen, you give sound advice and pull no punches.

Will I need to re-ring my pistons?

I really don't remember. I think they were chromolly. Don't recall brand. Bearings were Clevite. I think it was all ordered as a kit, but not absolutely sure.

Will I need to re-ring my pistons?

Thanks for the reply. I'll update at a later time. Not sure when I'll get out there and pull them.

Will I need to re-ring my pistons?

Not sure what you mean. I did the assembly myself. I cleaned everything thoroughly when I got it all home. This was about fifteen years ago. Engine runs well, just smokes and has the carbon build up.

Will I need to re-ring my pistons?

I have a poly 318 in a '67 Fury. The engine was rebuilt about 42,000 miles ago. When I had the heads done, I told the machine shop SPECIFICALLY that I did not want knurled valve guides, I want guide inserts. A while back, I had to pull the intake because of a vacuum leak. While it was apart, I...

    Timing set questions

I didn't pull the oil pan. I cleaned everything really well and sealed the front of the pan with "The Right Stuff" by Permatex. The gasket kit came with the oil pan/timing cover seal, but trying to get it in there with the timing cover was not happening. Just be sure to seal the tab holes in the...

    Allowable slack in timing chain?

New timing set installed, points gapped, idle set and she runs like new!

    Timing set questions

What about that chain slack? I thought those were supposed to be be pretty tight with virtually no slack. Is this ok?

    Timing set questions

I just put this Cloyes timing set on a '66 poly 318. The marks on the gears are BOTH at the top, instead of crank mark up and cam mark down, facing each other. The gears I just took off were the same way. I always thought the marks were supposed to point at each other. The installation...

    Allowable slack in timing chain?

It's going back together with a new timing set. I've been doing some troubleshooting because the engine won't run right. The timing chain is something I suspected may be causing at least some of the trouble. Had the chain been tight all around with no slack, I may have ruled it out. Since there...

    Allowable slack in timing chain?

Looks out of spec to me. If I remember correctly, once it's on, both sides are pretty taut. This one is 1/2 inch out anyway. I've read a lot of mixed reviews on adding tensioners. Thanks for the input, FABO! So true!

    Allowable slack in timing chain?

    OK. Thanks guys.
  23. 4spdcuda66

    Allowable slack in timing chain?

Should the timing chain be taut on both sides, or is there an acceptable amount of slack? If slack is allowed, how much is acceptable?

    Small block dipstick tube

I ran into this problem some time back and another FABO member told me about this trick. Find a piece of round stock that fits fairly close to the inside diameter of the tube. Push the rod down the tube as far as you can get it so it's at the flange. Grab it with a vise grip, ( be careful here)...

About what year model is this intake? Any good? Is that crack a big deal? Worth $50? https://quadcities.craigslist.org/pts/5517612082.html

    First port job

I would like some feedback from some of you more experienced head porters. I started this a few years ago, set it aside, and recently got back at it. I know a few things now that I didn't when I first started, and may have made a few mistakes that can't be undone. 1) I whittled the intake...
