    Torque Converter ID

The unpainted one is the one that came out of the 904 (999). If I remember correctly, the purple one was in a race-built 904 I got about 15 years ago, so very well could be a lock-up converter. I never knew that the pump slots were different for locking & non-locking. Thank y’all for the info...

    Torque Converter ID

Is there a difference between the keyway on a 904 vs 999 torque converter? Reason I ask is because the purple torque converter that I’ve had laying around for years, thinking it was for a 904, will not fit in what I’m pretty sure is a 1985 999. Look at the difference in the slot sizes of the two...

Ratchet shifter for 64 Dart 904

Yeah, going from pushbutton to a floor shifter involves a lot more than just slapping in a floor shifter. The pushbutton uses a cable and pulley system. I've never tore into it to see what all it would take, but as others have said, it would probably be a lot easier, and maybe even cheaper, to...

Ratchet shifter for 64 Dart 904

B&M Quick Silver should work. Isn't your Dart a push-button though?

    mopar grease equivalent

I've been using blue marine grease a lot lately. It's really sticky and nearly waterproof. Not sure how it would be for wheel bearing grease, but I use it on the bearings of my boat trailer and haven't had a problem yet.

Add your abody driveshaft length for quick reference

In my Duster with a small block/904/Dana 60, it came out to 48" center to center.

    904 transmission limits

I was running a stock 904 behind a similar 318, but I had the Comp Cams XE268 in it. It got hammered from a dead stop a lot.

Speedometer will only go up to 40mph, and idea how to fix?

Hard to say without seeing it. On mine, whatever holds the spring in place was gone, so I used a piece of safety wire (lock wire) to hold it down and it's worked fine ever since

Speedometer will only go up to 40mph, and idea how to fix?

Sounds like the light weight spring on the needle slipped.

    904??

How hard is it to rebuild? Are any special tools needed?

    Front seal leaking on 904

Oh. Well, it's not from being hot because it happens while it's just sitting in the driveway. Not overfilled either. The driveshaft needing balanced is a possibility, even though it's a new driveshaft that's supposedly balanced.

    Front seal leaking on 904

If it is just leaking from the vent hole, what's the cause? How'd you crack that bellhousing?

    Front seal leaking on 904

Ok. I really need to get this fixed. I still haven't messed with it yet. If it is the converter, what's the fix? Hopefully, it's just the seal. That's what I'm thinking since it seems worse when it's cold out.

    speedometer gear

I must have done something wrong. I came up with 1.348 teeth first time ant 1.47 teeth the second time. OK, I came up with 39.7, so I guess either a 39 or 40 tooth gear.

    driveshaft Length HELP ASAP!!

Oh, I misunderstood. I thought you meant they measured from the pinion to the yoke u-joint centers, not the driveshaft itself. So if the driveshaft is 48", you should be good.
  21. 64physhy

    Front seal leaking on 904

Well, it's coming from the inside front center of the bellhousing, so I'm pretty sure it's not the dipstick. I do think it has something to do with the converter draining, but it drains on my driveway, not into the pan.

    Front seal leaking on 904

I put some of the Lucas treatment in it. We'll see if that works, but as bad as it pisses out sometimes, I'm not counting on it. It's weird that it won't leak a drop for months, then all the sudden goes on the rag. My car must be a female.

    driveshaft Length HELP ASAP!!

If it measures 48" with the yoke pushed all the way in the transmission, then you need it shorter. If they pushed the yoke all the way in, then pulled it out 1" (or maybe 1 1/2") and came up with 48", then 48 is it. Like someone else mentioned, if the DS is too long by an inch or less, you...

    driveshaft Length HELP ASAP!!

48.96 seems short. With a 904 and Dana, mine is right at 48". I'm probably wrong, but I think the Dana is more than an inch longer on the pinion than an 8 3/4. I put it in and measured it, then had the driveshaft made.

    Front seal leaking on 904

Not sure. It's in my '74 Duster, but I'm not sure what year the transmission was originally from. It happens kind of randomly. The first couple times, the car had just been sitting for a few days, then all of the sudden dumped close to a pint overnight. That actually happened a couple times...

    Front seal leaking on 904

The front seal in my transmission appears to be leaking. How hard is it to replace? Which way would be easier; removing the engine to replace it, or removing the transmission, or pull them together and separate them once I get them out? I'm getting tired of removing and installing engines on...
