    BB Fan Shroud Question

Yes- it may work. I swapped a 383 in place of my slant and rotated the shroud 180 degrees. I had to make 4 pieces to offset it to the pass side about 2 inches. I made them out of some 3/4" wide thin aluminum flat stock. Mounted the shroud to them and then bolted it to the rad. Centered the...

    225 to 440 Swap!HELP!

Go with the trans dapt mounts- the're about half the price of the Schumachers. I paid $525 for a set of Schu's headers though and they were uncoated- pricey yes but fit my 383 like a glove. I went with a 187 oil pan- fits great. Will have to shorten driveshaft about 3 inches or so- cost me...

    Piston to valve clearance question

How far from the deck are the pistons? What head gasket? (compressed thickness?) Are there any valve reliefs in those pistons?

    Mechanical fuel pumps

I'm not 100% George but I think they're different. The arm I believe is a little longer on a small block pumpcause it rides on the eccentric at the front of the cam and the BB uses the pushrod setup.

a few shots of the start of the swap

You should be able to go to the local parts store and get a 3.9 or 5.2 (later model) starter that will save a ton of room. I lucked out with my 383 swap cause the slant had a newer reman on it that was the smaller version. check this out...

    Thinking of going BB...

I paid $525 for my uncoated Schumacher headers and painted them with VHT paint. I think it cost me another $30 to get them shipped to me They have the mounts too but the transdapts are half the price and all you have to do is cut the corner off the DS mount to clear the oil pump

    Slant 6 to 383

Check the Members Restoration forums and do a search for Mike's Dart. I just did the same swap you're talking about and there should be some helpful info for you in my thread.

    big block options ??

I really like how the 383 fits into my 71 swinger. I used Trans Dapt mounts and Schumacher headers and the fit was excellent. No clearance issues with the single diaphragm booster or blower motor.

    TTi Headers

I use the Schumachers and I use studs on both heads. I have taken the pass side header off by jacking up that side of the engine. I would imagine the drivers side might be a pain with the steering column and box there but havent had to do that yet. Probably doesnt help all that much but just...

    Radiator and Driveline help

My stock slant car came with A/C so it had a 22" radiator. I used it with a stock shroud and a 7 blade clutch fan that I bought from another member on this site. My 9:1 383 runs at 185-190 all day and even in some stop and go traffic the other day when it was 94 degrees. Not saying its ideal...

    Will this work ????

Welcome to the site. That sounds like the pistons are way down there. What cc are those heads?

BB Swap and column shift linkage

Near as I can tell the only difference b/w the two mounts was the clearance for the oil pump. Did you keep your column shift and just buy a cable?

BB Swap and column shift linkage

I'll check it out right now. thanks

BB Swap and column shift linkage

All right guys I need a few ideas. I swapped a 383 in place of the old slant and kept the column shift. I used trans dapts conversion mounts and Schumcher headers. I have a slight clearance issue with the shift linkage hitting the header when trying to shift into anything lower than drive. I...

    Throttle Cable

Hey Eric. I did end up just biting the bullet and going with Lokar. They sure make some pretty nice stuff and I thought everything was easy to install.

    Sealing Head Bolts..

Stock 452 heads and Mr. Gasket steel shims with 2 coats of permatex copper paint on both sides. I fixed the pass side head and everything seems to be fine now. I'm ashamed to admit that I missed a little bit of the old gasket material stuck to the head next to the water jacket!

    Coolant leak.

Well, I think its fixed. I came home early from work on friday and tore the pass side head off. I found a little bit of the old gasket material still on the head around the water passage near the intake mounting surface. Scraped everything with a razor and cleaned with brake cleaner, sprayed...

    Sealing Head Bolts..

is it necessary to seal the threads on the head bolts on a 383? I have a slight coolant leak and think that may be where its coming from.
  23. 7

    Coolant leak.

I retorqued the ones I could get to but the pass side header needs to come off to get to the bottom bolts. I think I just need to take both heads off and go with some composite gaskets instead of the shims. I guess it would be a good time to shave the heads to true them up...

    Coolant leak.

    Exhaust stud or head stud?

    Coolant leak.

Well, I'm getting things buttoned up on the 383 but today I noticed I have a little coolant leaking from the back corner of the passenger side head. I dont think its the header studs- it looks like its coming out from b/w the block and head. I guess I need to re-torque the heads or should I...

440 Dart cooling fan & shroud

I have a flex fan hanging in the garage if you want it to try. I'll ship it to you and hope it works and if it doesnt- oh well, at least I gained some garage space!

440 Dart cooling fan & shroud

have you looked into the HHR fan setup? I hear they fit great on a 22" radiator and flow a butt load of air and are pretty reasonable as far as cost goes. Dont know how deep they are though.

440 Dart cooling fan & shroud

George, I just measured my clutch fan and its 2 3/8 from mounting flange to radiator end of clutch. Maybe your rad is a little thicker than mine.?

440 Dart cooling fan & shroud

I wouldnt do a flex fan especially without a shroud. I dont think they cool worth a crap. I'll have to see what kind of room I have in the 71 but, I mocked mine up with my stock 2 core 22" rad and a clutch fan and had about 3/4 inch clearance from fan to radiator. I wonder why yours wont...
