The old GM 2.5 motors had direct gears with no chain. They were a bear to get on. We always heated the gear in boiling water and cooled the cam and crank by blowing air from an air gun onto them. They'd slide right on, and after the temperatures moderated, were on tight as could be.

As with most things in life, there is no such thing as too much lube. And check that keyway, make sure it's lined up to go right in the hole.

Did the same on my 318 Ramcharger. All my emission crap is gone, so I only needed vacuum for vacuum advance, brake booster, PVC and cruise. All that runs off my carb. I just used pipe plugs from the hardware store.

I promise you the distributor is not failing every year. You have other issues or install issues causing failure. Are you putting in new or used dizzy's? I can count on one hand how many distributors failed on my cars over the years and still have five fingers left. If they are indeed failing...

Replace it. It is a common problem on GM 3.1 motors. We take a hacksaw blade and score it deep enough with two cuts to either turn out or break it out with a screwdriver. It's not a big deal.

Did you pull off a line and put it in a jar and see if it is pumping fuel or not?

I have those damn ARP bolts in mine. I can access with a 1/4 drive swivel 12 point and an extension.

I made steel from the transmission to the front of the motor, then made a removable connection with more steel line to the front radiator , then hose from there. All hand made and bent lines. I like steel, but there has to be some rubber for flexibility.
