    Early 340 identification and value

Maybe, but mine has the VIN stamped there too.Nothing on the bellhousing flange.

    Early 340 identification and value

VIN should be on the front, drivers side of the block, not at the back. That was later. Check the valley, and see if it has extra oil passages, with block-off caps on the head surface.(just out of curiosity)

    Extra oil passages-early 340

Well, thats three we know of. They made it sound rare, but likely all early blocks were like this. I wonder if early 318's have them too? I can't remember seeing them before.

    Extra oil passages-early 340

In the current issue of Mopar Collectors Guide, a gentleman stated that his 6-67 date coded 340 block has 4 oil passages in the valley, instead of two. Two of them are capped off. My 6-67 block is the same. I'm now very curious as to why they were cast in. I wonder if Mopar had other oiling...

    Indy LA-X Heads on a 318???

Sounds interesting. These are closed chamber right? I would still unshroud the intakes as best as possible. I hope you get some good responses here. This is interesting.

Attempt at home made t/a heads

Regardless of how you proceed from here, I admire the time, and craftsmenship you have invested in this project. Anybody can unbox new heads and slap em on. I hope you complete the heads, and take pride in your accomplishment....well done :salute:

What year 340 intake is this?

Thats not a spreadbore intake. I made the same mistake once. The 68-69 squarebores had slightly larger secondaries. Spreadbores are MUCH larger.

360 or 318 which would you rather have???

Corsairs were called "Whistling Death" by the Japanese, not P-38's.

360 or 318 which would you rather have???

Ya, I kind of thought it would be a no-brainer in any post(except a restoration 340 project) Maybe we should start a GM small block forum.....should we do a poll?

    Question on 302 heads for a 318

I'm pretty sure that 302's are "closed chamber". They are not like the old 318 heads. Am I wrong?

    All Small blocks are anchors.........

The boy does know how to get a response though. (He's just used to 318's)

    Help understanding my odd timing?!?!

Great explanation moper. Duster, you should start a new thread to help with your cam. There is A lot of knowledge here, but they need a "cam" title in a thread to find it. I'd help, but I'm an idiot with cams.

    opinion

At 10 : 1 you really only need a set of good gaskets like the Fel-pro's, even at .060 over. The Cometic MLS gaskets are quite superior though.

    What else do I need?

About 270 hp would be my guess. More depending on the comp ratio. (how old are you now?) Welcome to the site.

340 replacement block.. with a roller cam?

I just read that last night! Any insight on how it worked out? You did a fantastic job.

What does anyone think of these intakes?

The price is certainly attractive, but I too like to stay away from Chinese parts. I run a knock-off single plane( American made), that works really well. The only knock I have on this one is the dual bolt pattern. It just doesn't "look" right. If it does what you wanted, then you got a good deal.

Rebuilt 340 been sitting for about 5 years

Re-priming the oil pump wouldn't hurt either way.

    you know your stupid when

Those caps are garbage. I opened my daughters up once to check the coolant level, and could never get it to seal again. I just bought a new cap, and no more worriessss.

oil pan has a hole in it

I would agree with caferacerx. A good welder could get you back on the road by Wed. Probably cheaper than a new pan. My pan was sectioned, and three inches added for more sump depth. Never has leaked.(yes, it was TIG welded)

oil pan has a hole in it

Don't be ssssilly Snake. Buy the new pan. J.B. is NOT the way to fix an oil pan. Shame on you guys for suggesting it. It might work, but this is the life blood of his new engine we are protecting. Maybe you could find a used one, but it sounds like you've already ordered a new one. Good decision.

    oil priming engine

Make sure you rotate clockwise, and protect the bushing(black tape, or grease) I turn the crank around by hand a couple of times like others have mentioned. I just read an article that said to open up the oil pump, and fill it with assembly lube also. Never done that, but it sounds like a good...
