    Column Differnces - 1970 Duster

I know the 72 has the big unlock lever that you must rotate/depress to unlock ignition to turn key. I think 71 is same, but not 100%. Don't believe 70 has this safety device. Grant

    Frame sagging?

I believe the top of the rocker is straight, and I would guess that any sag in the body would occur in this area, so the first thing I would do would be to put a straight edge along the sill area and see if there is any bowing, or at least difference from side to side. Grant

    Torsion Bar Install

As stated above, left and right bars twist in opposite directions, so must go in the correct side. Front and rear does not matter if the torsion bar hexes are not offset in their clocking. Hold a pen horizontally in front of you with one hand on each end. Now twist one way with your left...

    how bad is this rust?

If the rest of the body and frame is good, and you're willing to get it fixed, 340plot did one on his Duster recently. His first time, and it came out great. You will need the equipment, space and time to do it. If you can find someone to weld it, you can get a clean rail/fenderwell, drill...

I think the 72in lbs is just to ensure that you have taken up all the slack without initially overtightening (same as tranny bands). Grant

    Steering column years?

The differences in A-body columns is that - all standard steering interchange and all power steering interchange. However, some have column shift, some don't. As well, 67-69 used key on dash, 70 key on column. There are differences in the ignition lock method, and I believe 71 started using the...

those that have builded a frontend?????

I know you are NOT interested in other products, but the latest MopMusc showed install of a C#AP system with front rack. Used a welded on extension on spindle, and the guys doing it fabbed a brace to support the coilover. Maybe something to look at for ideas? Grant

    steering couplier removal ??

If you look in the hole, you will see the tube.. find a punch that just fits in the hole and start tapping. Definitely setup a jack with some type of platform to balance the K-member on. I always raise the jack setup right to the K-member. That way you are not going to put the weight of the K...

    Torsion bar Ancor Crossmember

It wasn't as much that it doesn't work.. it looked like it was cut out with an acetelyne torch. The pieces were not anywhere close to fitting and needed a lot of grinding to clear what needed ckearancing. Finishing of edges? Non-existent. Since the reason I bought it was because the torsion bar...

    Torsion bar Ancor Crossmember

Having purchased one of those Autorust caps in the past, my opinion would be to get a nice rust-free complete original one from one of the members here.. even if it costs a few $$ more to get it to you.. the ART one is crap.. CRAP Grant

    Clunking noise passenger side

When you first move forward or backwards, the pressure will attempt to turn the tire (toe). I would guess to check the strut rods. Any play here will allow them to clunk. Grant

aftermarket steering wheel hub issues (trying to get it off)

LOL.. don't worry Woody, you're not alone. Years ago I saw a Dart sitting on the end of a driveway. Typical Winnipeg salt case. Suspension Refresh

I agree with Redfish, if you need a rebuild, don't piece meal it. It will just accelerate wear on any other bushings. One item that can help a lot is a front ant-roll bar, and there are kits for cars not equipped with one from the factory. Grant

new to forum, resto, and safe-t-cap

Tried one of the auto-rust tech torsion mount kit and found it to be a crudely made piece of steel that required at least as much work to properly install as cutting out and replacing the entire crossmember. Fit and finish may have been presentable with additional grinding, welding, and...

    A-Body torque boxes?

From my understanding, all of the 72 Swinger 340 cars were dealer-order specials. Correct me if I am wrong, but I understood they were purposely batch built for the orders. Maybe it is possible that the purchasing dealers specified that all the cars received them? Do other known examples have...
