What spark plugs for a ‘66 273 Commando?

I’m not a big fan of Champion spark plugs (not impressed with their quality). What is a good alternative for a stock 273 Commando?

    Large valved 273

I think this is a great discussion. But I’m wondering what the point is of maxing out a 273? Is it for stock appearing or pure stock drags? If not it would be more cost effective and much easier to install a larger LA engine.

    2.02 intake valves... Overkill??

For all rpm ranges airflow is the key (it's why two intake valves work so well ). So if you can go to 2.02" I think it's a great idea . The intake port volume can have a negative effect at low engine speeds but it should not be confused with valve size. The 2.02" was proposed for the 5.9L...

1992 Dodge Dakota 5.2 Magnum advice

Intake is #1, the exhaust system has a ton of back pressure. Any intake would be a huge improvement & your normal calibration should work pretty good, it's very conservative. After that a bit higher compression & I think 2.02" intake valves fit. The heads have a lot of flow but the engine RPM...

273 time to 'fish or cut bait'...

Sounds like you have the major parts to make two cars. You should focus on one, sounds like the four speed car is the better candidate. I would buy a cam that someone else has had a good experience with. See ToolManMikes 273 build. The part numbers on the heads and intake would help a lot...

Video - Horsepower Loss To Fans.....

This was interesting and insightful for what it is. But it is a very simple test. It shows that fan load can be surprisingly high - which is good info. The issue with a simple test is that it always raises more questions but this test isn't a research project. As mentioned the different...

How much lift can be run with stock magnum lifters??

It means there is no additional airflow over 0.5 inch lift with a 2.0 inch intake valve. This is just a pretty good general guideline- your results may vary.

How much lift can be run with stock magnum lifters??

Typically valve lift over 25 % of intake valve size does not provide much additional flow.

can you raise the redline of an engine

The simple answer us "yes". The problem with increasing the red-line RPM is that often the limit is discovered when things break and this is dangerous at high engine RPMs. With most production engines the red line is determined by the valve-train, typically control of the valve motion is lost (...

Are Mopar small block heads interchangeable left to right?

The LA engines (273, 318, 340 & 360) have heads that are the same. I know some of the current Chrysler engines (4.7l V8) has a left & right head.

    273, the good points

The '65 Barracuda has potential to be a good vintage racer. The 273 has a nice stiff valve train with solid lifters so it should rev up well. Adding headers solves the biggest issue with the '65 273 and that's the restrictive left side'exhaust manifold. I think someone had a '65 at the...

    Light throttle performance problem....FIXED! Thanks!

I've had champion spark plugs do this. About 25 years ago a buddy had a truck with 318, he did a basic tune-up & had same problem. He did NOT want to try changing out his new Champion plugs but when he finally tried another set of a different grand his problem was solved.

    273 spark plug mishap

There are no good reasons to use the wrong spark plug. Could have bought the incorrect plugs or because of oil or fuel fouling. That is an excellent question to ask the previous owner - please let us know the answer. There are many factors that go into the dimensions and specs of the plugs...

    Are aluminum heads worth it?

In my opinion heads are about intake airflow, that trumps everything else. The aluminum does save a lot of weight so it might be worth it for that but that's up to you to decide.

273ci--a keeper in my 64 Dart GT 4-speed?

I love 273s! The two barrel 273 is just a nice running motor. But it would be a bit more affordable to put in a nice 318 and the extra displacement gets more torque at low rpms where it's noticeable. If you go for even more torque & power with say a 360 then you'll start getting into...

Fixing vs. Buying a New Engine / 273

The risk is that you may find more work in the 273 than you plan on so you'd be better off swapping engines. You might be able to Find a good running parts car with a 318 or better a 360. The 340 sounds like a good way to go too. Might as well plan on the axle swap at the same time. No...

budget timing set for 273 daily driver ?

Changing the centerline of the cam ( cam timing) can add low end torque at the expense of high end power. I do not have any experience with this on a 273. But be careful as advance and retard can get confusing when dealing with cam centerline.

The best factory head that never was

Or a 3.5L 4 valve head for the LA, it's got same bore spacing & head boot pattern. It's a pretty low profile for an overhead cam design too. So how does a 4 valve 5.9L sound?
  29. SSVDP

The best factory head that never was

I'm thinking aluminum Hemi heads, like the DeSoto's, for an LA to take advantage of the cam position ( or eliminate the odd push rod angle). Could probably use a lot of port development but there's a ton of potential.

    Marine 273 build

Can't add anything to the 273 discussion but did have two Correct Craft Ski Nautiques. They are top shelf rides, very well made by a small family owned company. I'm an average skier at best and me skiing behind one of these boats would be like taking a Saturn V rocket for a Disney vacation.
