Need help for 1st Cam break in :

The two above posts are spot on. The only other thing I would add is having a fire extinguisher nearby. Broke in a Clay Smith solid lifter cam, slightly bigger than the Formula "S" cam, ran it for 30 minutes just like 318willrun described. Didn't need the fire extinguisher, thank God! But I...

    Fel Pro 1213

I’ve always read and heard a cooler air/fuel mixture is denser and more desirable creating more power. But I’ve also heard a heated intake manifold enhances atomization, hence Dicer’s explanation from the Glenn’s Guide. I‘m guessing a warmer mixture is better for all around drivability...

    Timing question

I’m confused by your answer here. You also say in the second paragraph of your first post that the “balancer was checked on the crank”. Are you assuming the indentations are correct, or did you index the pulley at TDC when you were building the motor? Jake’s right, pulleys are known to...

'65 Barracuda 273 engine install from underneath body

Mine went in from the bottom, too. Engine/trans were bolted together and rolled under the car on a pair of HF dollies. Only suggestion I would offer is to consider when to install your exhaust manifolds. I recall I fitted them to the engine from the top, right before I completely dropped the...

I owned two Opels years ago. If I ran into another Manta, i’d Be really tempted to buy it. What are you putting this motor in?

Rebuilt 302 casting heads available through Rockauto

Just to muddy the waters, this thread ran about a year ago about the 302 vs. The earlier 920 (another closed chamber head). 920 vs. 302 Heads

    273 Build

Richard, I am using the high compression Egge pistons Mike speaketh about, with the ‘66 920 heads. Heads were only resurfaced and I lightly polished the chambers. No pinging whatsoever ever. (I’m running the Eddy 500 on a stock manifold.)

    engine build for reliability

Remember the cars we drove back in the day? I remember after her divorce, my mom was determined to show us seven kids she could take us on a vacation. We packed up the ‘69 Ford Galaxie wagon, drove from San Jose to Guaymas in Mexico, then back again without a problem. It held up perfectly fine.

Whats the consensus on valve cover gaskets?

Poontang? I want some!, whatever it is. I used Fel-Pro with a very thin smear of Permatex silicone just to hold them in place on the factory Formula S valve covers. I tightened them to spec, something light, like 15-18 INCH-POUNDS. I have pulled the covers off to do a valve adjustment...

    Camshaft degree equipment?

I also used a Harbor Freight dial indicator on their magnetic base, a coat hanger as a pointer, and a degree wheel I downloaded off the internet and glued to cardboard. I had the heads off when I did this. Not sure how you could go any cheaper!

Seat pressure and break in. Hyd flat tappets

Let ‘er rip. I broke in my solid Clay Smith cam for 30 minutes between 2000 and 2500 with Shell Rotella and Redline Engine Break-In Additive. The cam is a little hotter than the 273 Formula S cam. No problem. Enjoy the moment.

    Edelbrock 1405 ( 600 cfm) on a 273

I have the 500 on my 273 with Egge high compression pistons. It had a light hesitation with a 1403 installed out of the box. I enrichened it with the Edelbrock timing kit, runs better. It's a new engine, though, I haven't revved it much past 4K yet. It might need a little more gas.

    Spark plug read

Your avatar reads "Ping Control", so I'm trusting you. Mine look like the OP's. I read "give it as much timing as it will take." I'm running 17-18* advance, full near 50*, starts easy, no pinging or dieseling, but also look like the OP's pictures. I'll try bumping mine down a little.

Please educate me ... how can you tell the timing is too advanced by looking at this plug? The white tip? I would not have even considered timing.

    early 273 pistons.

I've had a '64 2v and currently have a '66 4v Formula S. Those pistons look like the 10:1 (advertised) 4v pistons. The 2v had somewhat of a dish. My 4v were flat with valve reliefs and slightly under the deck when I pulled it apart.
