What do you think about this 318 guys.

*Skeptical* The HP is nearly the same from 4776 - 5483 RPM. I've never seen that before.

detonation / knock issue on 340

Know what you're jetted at too, as was mentioned. Your distributor may have some quicker advance springs in there....find out the curve. Another thing, if this motor burns a bit of oil, that can definitely cause detonation issues.

    Supercharged 273

Well, I think forged pistons and maybe some decent 340 rods wouldn't be breaking the bank too badly. And getting some kind of boost ignition retard unit and a water~methanol injection would probably allow you to run 15 psi safely.

    Supercharged 273

Gee, with their forged cranks and then maybe add a set of high quality rods/forged pistons.....you'd think quite a bit. You could make it like a 340 with a smaller bore.

Freezing temperatures - water in engine

BWAHAHAHA.....hey you think he may have experienced slightly higher-than-normal corrosion in his cooling system by running salt water? I love it!

Freezing temperatures - water in engine

Funny you ask this question. I drained the radiator on a friend's 69 dart 360 (at my house) when I knew the temps were going to drop low. Next morning....(and I got this feeling of horror around 2am @ the residual water in the block)......I rushed out to find a freeze plug laying under the...

    Solutions for too much compression

Actually the title of the thread should be: "Solutions for engine pinging". I wouldn't do anything until I looked into what jets are in the carb, and go from there.....also the power valve. "Holley 750 vacuume secondary with “stock” jets and such."

64 Plymouth 273 Intermitent severe misfire.

I've always heard that a condensor is always suspect. Change it and the points and set them perfectly of course. Next I always drop my fuel tank and clean it out. Yeah, it totally sucks but it's a good feeling to cross that off your list. You could be sucking up some tank debris every 10...

Rookie mechanic: trouble shooting advice requested

I would consider your power source IN to the ignition to be suspect. Get your voltmeter on the wire feeding the box and crank it over.

    273 4bbl dyno results

Thanks, nice thread.....it got my attention. Yeah, it's too bad you couldn't get your hands on an actual 273 head gasket set, steel shim even...... I wonder if a carb spacer would've done a little good too. I guess there's always 50 "what-ifs" possibilities when you're dyno-ing.

    273 Supercharging?

Just get a 360......hahaha....just kidding. I say yeah go for it. Might wanna get some better rods, and better pull out the ol' wallet if you want some 273 forged pistons. Chances are, your 273 crank is forged steel so that's good. I was thinking of going the same route, except using a...

    Cooling issue

210 is not even boiling yet, but.....I understand. You wanna probably maintain 180 if at all possible. Like was mentioned, those metal shrouds tend to block the natural airflow at speed. I'm not too wild about them for that reason. I like the large single fans mounted on the backside of the...

    Guess My HP

I'll say....uhhh....520 H.P. 465 Tq. Gawd, those flow numbers on the heads look great.

Oil misting from dipstick tube - blowby?

My thoughts as well. You need a constant vacuum in the crankcase (however slight) and you need a setup that will accommodate plenty of volume of blow-by (the driver's side valve cover needs to be plumbed to the air filter). This setup also allows fresh air from the air cleaner to drawn down...

#920 vs. #675 Heads "Compression vs. Cylinder Flow"

That's really cool!!! So I guess it's safe to say, those earlier heads are worth a tenth in the quarter! I've always thought "compression is your friend" too. Thanks for that, 69cuda440!

What's Your Favorite Oil Pan Gasket Sealant?

Yes, that's me too......but I also apply it lightly (and I mean lightly) to the gasket, then lay it on the block for a while to get a little tacky, then start setting on the oil pan with the bolts just lightly tightened. Then a little while later, I'll start snugging them down. Mine don't...

273-2 performance (or lack there of) question

I hope they kept the original heads on it, not do the ol' "trade in" for some other later 318 heads when they did the rebuild.

273-2 performance (or lack there of) question

I think it should be peppy as hell, at least up to about 4500 RPM. Might have some linkage slack issues or retarded timing holding it back. 70 MPH tops?......that's hilarious!

    Loud chirping noise.

Okay, then that changes what I thought this was.....just a cam swap and a converter change out. Have you peeked in the bottom of that trans bellhousing area and seen any metal shavings?

The flex plate was never removed during this converter install, correct?

    Slight miss when cruising

Increasing the size of the fuel lines? I don't think that could be the problem at all......if it were, you'd definitely know it at WOT. You're using a very small volume of fuel while at cruise. I think you may be experiencing pre-ignition, not a miss. I've replaced my spark plugs and gotten...

    Loud chirping noise.

Dear gawwd!! I'd shut that thing OFF! I'm going to guess that maybe you didn't spin the converter all the way into the trans and maybe it has shoved the crank forward, trashing out the thrust bearings....? OR.......maybe that new cam is trashing out a lifter or 2 or 3 or......?
  26. cudavert

    What cam would you run?

    I sort of like a 224/230 @ .050 setup....on a 110 or 112 LSA.

Will These Heads Fit my 273?

The 273 will run with those heads, but the drop in compression (in addition to using those thick blue head gaskets that have a giant bore) will be sad. I agree with the above, $900 seems nutso. Look around and don't accept a machine shop that knurls the valve guides......make sure they replace...
