    Dyno testing a stock(?) 1972 440

Sounds like fun, although that "down-in-the-hole" problem was the first thing that popped into my mind. Don't suppose you'd wanna tear it down to the bare block and send it out for a proper decking wouldjya? :D That would be interesting.

    Just rambling....

Makes sense to me. It's called a "budget build" and it's all I could really afford to do anyway. I love seeing engine dyno charts and different engine comparisons. I'll bet that this 500" stroker you're talking about would do just fine until about 4700 RPM. I'm all about...

    Horse power guesstimations

I'm still tripping that you did an 11.20 with only a 650 carb! What the heck? I'll guess 570 H.P. on that new setup.

    just rebuilt runs bad

I would think to look at those non-adjustable rockers too. I can't stand running them with ANY aftermarket hot cam. It just bugs me. Those are for grocery-getters. Second, there's always the possiblility that the harmonic balancer outer ring has slipped and the timing mark is incorrect. And...

    Are they worth the Trouble?

I agree @ the fans....but I'd only run the electrically-driven water pump if I was scratchin' for that last .10th. At least if the electric fans took a dump, as long as you're moving, you can make it home. Not so with the electric pump.

    650 or 750 holley

750 DP. Shoot, what's the CFM rating on a Thermoquad that they put on a STOCK 318 or 360?!? Leave the 600's for the cruise night boys.

    not the head gasket?

I would think that this statement is a clue.....that it may not be the head gaskets. But if you've got 3 cyls that are more than 10% down compared to the others......I'd be looking around @ everything, especially cyl walls and maybe heads for cracks.

    Dart falls on it's face.

This seems to be an intermittant problem....you say "sometimes" it happens, which would lead me to believe that the jetting is fine. The first thing I would do is tee in a fuel hose to a pressure gauge that you can hold inside of the car while you are mashing the throttle, and try to reproduce...

    a-body vs. e

But when talking about 318's, it's funny how everyone can go GA-GA over the Chevy 327 and the big mystique over that motor.....but realistically, with decent compression and heads, a punched out 318 is a more potent motor with it's longer rods and bigger lifter diameter. No respect, I tell...

How much HP will it deliver?

Yes, that's the manifold I was talking about, except not for that price with that "endura shine" setup. You could go a bit more radical on the cam, maybe up into the [email protected] range.....but I think you'll want some torque for pulling, so maybe keep the cam you mentioned. It doesn't sound like a...

How much HP will it deliver?

Yeah, I'm thinking along the lines with Wild&Crazy here......except I don't know if the valve-to-piston clearance would allow over .500 lift.....better be sure about that one. But that cam you've got doesn't sound too bad......I'm thinking 375 HP......hell, if it's going to be a 371 now, that's...

1500USD to build as much horse in a 360 as possible. What would you do?

Errrr.....no, you DON'T want dished ones. I'm just saying, that's what came from the factory back in the 70's and it's not good for compression. Sometimes the higher domed pistons a little bit pricey, but I'm sure you can find something reasonable. Polishing the side beams of the rods (I've...

1500USD to build as much horse in a 360 as possible. What would you do?

Maybe you could get the casting numbers off the heads and start looking around the internet, to find out the combustion chamber volume. They're probably around 76cc or so.....anyway, if I remember correctly, the problem with the 360s was the pistons were usually "dished", which dropped the...

1500USD to build as much horse in a 360 as possible. What would you do?

Wow! How about used headers?.......is it the exchange rate that is making them cost $604? That's crazy!......but there's always an alternative!

1500USD to build as much horse in a 360 as possible. What would you do?

Can't you get *cheap* headers over there?.......like Hedman or any other mail order ones like from Summit Racing? Or you could make your own!.....there are kits!
  22. cudavert

1500USD to build as much horse in a 360 as possible. What would you do?

I would say first.....get some pistons that will get you a good decent compression ratio....around 9.75 to 1. See what heads you have and the combustion chamber volume and figure it out. Then maybe a decently hot solid roller cam, if possible. This cam alone will probably set you back close...

    Big smallblock power..Turbo?

Let me throw this out there.....my 19 y.o. son has a '98 Nissan 240SX that has over 80,000 miles on the 2.4 liter stock motor. He went on Ebay and purchased a BRAND NEW made in China turbo (T3~T4 hybrid copy), a NEW stainless tubular exhaust manifold, and a NEW wastegate for.......$425.00!!! I...

    Big smallblock power..Turbo?

I think a good custom turbo setup could be applied to a fuel injected 318 or 360. Even if you need to have custom fabricated tubular headers made, I would think it might not be too much different that going the full-blown normally aspirated route, cost-wise......especially when you consider...

    318 heads on a 360?

Yes, according to their website, they offer the "LA-X" and the "MA-X" (orig. LA style and Magnum style). I think I'll call them on Tuesday and see what the cost will be. They'd better be a bit cheaper than Edelbrocks.

    The Truth about 318s

All great input here......I just wanted to add that when people compare a 318 to a 327 Chevy (an engine that is considered a legend), I think the 318 shines (I'm sure most average people don't), what with it's longer rods, bigger lifter foot and the fact that you can build it with some 360 heads...

    318 heads on a 360?

Don't 318's have "shorty" intake ports compared to 340/360 heads? Measure 'em.....I believe some of the mid to late 80's 318's started coming with 360 style heads, but have those giant 76cc chambers. I never understood how people went crazy over those "302" casting heads, and put them on...

car still diseling run on prob

It doesn't matter the number of turns.....as long as RPM and vacuum are peaked out and it runs smooth. Sometimes you'll need to go back and adjust (drop down) the idle speed as you turn out the mixture screws. I think I set mine around 625~650 RPM in neutral.
  30. cudavert

car still diseling run on prob

I would say it's probably idling too high, and also if it's running too lean, that will make the combustion chamber hotter, causing some of the carbon to act as a "glow plug". I try to get my idle down pretty low and set the idle mixture at the RPM "peak".......and like was mentioned, do your...
