Mating a 4 speed to a slant, question on years

He needs a late '68 & up flywheel. It's a 74 motor I THINK this is correct because the 68 up flywheel would fit tight on the newer crank . The 67 flywheel would have a pilot hole too small to go on the larger crank pilot. Easier fix than on the automatic. Since he's using ALL 68 and newer...

Mating a 4 speed to a slant, question on years

Here's an old post when I was trying to do an automatic: Can I use a 67 904 on a 72 225 or is the crankshaft register hole size a problem?

Mating a 4 speed to a slant, question on years

There is a very confusing issue with the slant six crank between 67 and 68. The size of the hole at the end of the crank changed. The flywheel from one will not fit on the other engine. Its a huge problem on automatics but will also be a pain on standards. I am wanting to say the newer flywheel...

    Motor Mounts

Assuming this is a 67-72 A body slant 6 this looks correct. Since the bolts that hold the mount to the block are so easy to get to, I usually remove the lower mount bolts under the K frame ear, then jack up the motor, remove the mount bracket from the block and change the rubber mount on the...

    Can I use a 67 904 on a 72 225 or is the crankshaft register hole size a problem?

Again, this was all spelled out for me in the beginning of this post but to reiterate; The crank hole (register) is smaller on the 67 and down and larger on the 68 up slant 6 engines. The "nub" of the converter is small on the 67 and large on the 68 up. The smaller nub fits into the bigger hole...

That's actually the easier one to get. I've probably got a used one of those too

Stripped spark plug threads 75 Dart

I have a correct tap for the spark plug threads but it won't come close to threading in the hole that's there now. As soon as it cools down below 100 (the outside temp not the motor), I'm going to pull the head and post some pics.

Stripped spark plug threads 75 Dart

I just bought a 75 Dart Sport 225-6 "parts car" that the seller said was a low mileage driver until they broke off a spark plug in the head. Apparently they tried drilling it with the head attached and what was left was a hole with no threads. I was amazed with how complete and unmolested the...

Oil pressure light coming on at idle

I have a high mileage 67 engine in my Valiant. It runs great but when warm, the oil light flickers at idle with the AC on. It had a manual gauge in the car I took if from and the idle pressure does drop below 9 psi when hot. I have another engine ready to go in if it ever dies, but for now I've...

    installing intake/exhaust manifold

Someone posted a link a while back to a site (slant6.com perhaps?) where it outlined the correct slant manifold installation procedure and where each washer goes. I can't find that site now that I'm ready to do it. What I really liked was the diagram that showed which bolts get triangular...

Carburetor loses prime after 8+ hours

It may have been said already, but many of the two barrel carbs wear at the bushing where the lower throttle plate shaft goes through the casing. Fuel will leak out through the bushing when it sits for a period of time. I've had several slants where I had to turn the engine over and pump the...

"rocks in a blender" sound in my wife's slant Valiant

I have recently been educated about the 67 small snout trans thing when I was looking for a replacement for the Valiant so I checked it. The trans in this car was correct for a 72. Big snout. So that can't be what caused the problem. Anyway the Valiant also had a cracked exhaust manifold, so...

"rocks in a blender" sound in my wife's slant Valiant

We drove the thing with it making noise for three months. Back then, I took out the dust shield because I thought it was hitting. It got gradually louder and LOUDER but still ran fine! I even drove it into the garage to take it out! When I took out the first TC bolt, I got an ear..Damn! The...

    Can I use a 67 904 on a 72 225 or is the crankshaft register hole size a problem?

Thanks for all the help, everybody! It's good to have this info BEFORE you pull your driver apart! By the way, here's a pic of the 67 flexplate stacked under the 74 flexplate. It clearly illustrates the difference in register hole size:

    Can I use a 67 904 on a 72 225 or is the crankshaft register hole size a problem?

Thanks for all the help! I ended up lucking into a 74 Dart parts car, so I'll do the tranny swap from that (flexplate and all since mine is toast). I have a 67 trans that was rebuilt at some point if somebody needs that. Thanks again!

    Can I use a 67 904 on a 72 225 or is the crankshaft register hole size a problem?

So. I spent the evening on Google and I may have found my own answer: Chrysler increased the diameter of the Slant Six (and small block V8) crankshaft flange register in 1968. You can put a later engine (1968-up) in front of an early 904 torque converter (1960-’67), but it is very important to...

    Can I use a 67 904 on a 72 225 or is the crankshaft register hole size a problem?

I've opened this discussion up on a "wanted" thread (because I may need a new flexplate) but I thought I'd post it here also. I'd appreciate any advice from people who have done it! I have a rebuilt 904 from a 67 slant (I think it's a 170). I need to put it on my 72 225. I've been reading...

Newb with a 225 needs assistance

By the way, if you are thinking about swapping to a 318, I'd advise against it based on your admitted low financial situation. The 318 is not a "bolt in" job. You will have to either change the K frame or buy/make conversion mounts. Also the exhaust, the pulleys, brackets, linkages, wiring...
