On MSD ignitions, the primary coil voltage is very high and is not compatible with most tachometers. The tach should be connected to a tach output wire, not the primary coil wire, and if it's not, it might be the cause of your issues...

HOw much voltage do have at the battery? I'm thinking that the gauge is wired backwards and you have a huge discharge issue (short to ground).

Which one? The Unilite and S/S 42 is meant as a all-in-one type set up so that one won't work but the S/S 32 series will work with the MSD box.

There's two wires going to the regulator. One runs to the field on the Alt and the other is a wire that senses true voltage and should have 12V+ with the key on. If that wire does not have 12V, the regulator will think that the alt is not charging and allow current from the field wire to ground...

Keep in mind that if you are running a stock type ignition with a ballast resistor, that you will need to find a way to by-pass the ballast when the starter was actuated.

This is why stock distribs suck. The advance plate is held down by a simple spring clip under the static plate. Anyway, I'd bend the pickup so it's straight without applying pressure to the advance plate as that's not what the plate would see under running conditions.

I just added a "headlight on" light to the custom dash I installed in my Ramcharger. It serves the purpose pretty well.
