    I just want to clear something up because I think I've confused myself. When assembling an 8-3/4, are there supposed to be two gaskets between the tub flange and the retainer? I looked up a couple diagrams online and one was showing two gaskets before putting the retainer on. Not sure why...

    Easy way to tell is also the shape of the pan and/or gasket. The 727 has a pronounced sort of bulged or rounded corner, the 904 is more squared corners all around: See Below:

    He's just saying that even if the axle is the "incorrect" (longer or shorter) length, you can still use a wheel with a different backspacing to move the wheel centerline in or out depending on what you need. Nobody's trying to be a dick, we usually try and help each other...relax.
