    Custom Drive shaft vendors

I bought mine (CR MO shaft with the big 1300 (?) joints) from Dr Diff. He sourced from Strange Engineering I think he said. Nice shaft. (That sounds dirty)

    727 or 904

....windows is better......LOL :poke: (Actually, I think they BOTH suck to some degree and whichever one you prefer to work in is the "best one").....LOL

    727 or 904

:thumbrig: Same here..... My car (72 fish) had no tranny when I got it. Same cost to rebuild/freshen either a 904 or 727.....figured with a 727 I would be prepared for whatever I might end up doing later to the SB. Transgo shift kit with some upgrades inside. The kit allows me to...

    Whats everyone running for gears?

To update mine -- I just got 3.55s (US Gears) in a nodular 489 case .....same 727 with a TCI Breakaway stall converter and tweaked 318. 25" (235x60x15) tires right now and wondering if I went to 275/60/15 if that would be too much tire for my combo.....like taking a step backwards???

Eaton Detroit Truetrac or Auburn Pro Series Limited Slip

I am running a Trutrac in a 489 nodular iron case with 3.55 US gears (all from Dr Diff, by the way). Love it! Only problem.....I get so much traction with the trutrac is that my 318 doesnt have enough low end to overpower it and peel out....LOL I have neck snapping acceleration now, compared...

    $$$ to rebuild a 904

Just for reference in the Pittsburgh/PA area.... I paid $850 for the guy I had rebuild my 727 tranny the third time, and that included some minor hard parts, and R/R in the car and tweaking. The first yahoo I paid like $1200 dropping the tranny off to him....TWICE....now that included some...

    Whats everyone running for gears?

An update for me: Just installed a 489 nodular iron case on my 8 3/4" with 3.55s and a Detroit Trutrack unit. Its a 318, 727 , with 15.25" tires right now. I am loving it around town so far.....its really odd revving so high after having the 2.76s in there....plus having other cars that have...

    8 3/4 chunk math - sticker shock

I know there are deals out there...but I swear i have been watching for a long time and nothing seemed to work. $300 is good, except I dont want the cone type. I pulled the trigger today and I should have my new chunk in a couple weeks. :thumblef: I hope the new gears make the difference I...

    8 3/4 chunk math - sticker shock

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I dont know , maybe I am just too particular, but I have been searching bascically since I bought the car two years ago for what I want. True, I have been more or less ignoring 741 chunks....but I dont recall ever seeing a 741 with the clutch sure grip...

    8 3/4 chunk math - sticker shock

Valid question. Basically, I like to always try and have my cake and eat it too....LOL Assuming the 3.55 setup works the way I hope (upgrading from 2.76, so looking for some more oomph) I wont be selling it or even pulling it out again as far as I am concerned. But for the kind of money we...

    8 3/4 chunk math - sticker shock

I hear ya......and yeah, the peace of mind I would get from buying this setup versus buying someone;s used whatever and hoping it holds up (if I could find what I am looking for that is) is probably worth it. Still, the cheap bastard in me wants to hold out for that "hemi in a barn, cheap"...LOL

The dana setup is $1800 and up from them right now. Plus, I have been told that the Dana "uses" 35 HP and is 75-100 lbs heavier than the 8 3/4...... is this true?

    8 3/4 chunk math - sticker shock

Oh yeah, I am planning on Carlisle....but thats a LOOONG time away....LOL All I saw last year were 3.23/cone style 489s for sale, some were pretty crusty.... and the sellers thought they were gold.....so frankly not holding out much hope for that. I had heard about a person or two finding a...

You are probably right to a degree. For instance, I hate hearing people talk down on the 318....I have had a blast with mine so far and I think the 3.55 upgrade will really give me more smiles/gal. For what I am doing with the car right now, the 318 rocks. But there is always "a step...

    8 3/4 chunk math - sticker shock

Do you mean piece it together as I find the parts? I dont know where folks are looking, but I cant see any way of building what I want for less than $1200...the $1375 version is a little beefier than what I wanted....but for an extra $175, what the hell...already spending big cash. I know...

    8 3/4 chunk math - sticker shock

Yep, $500 seems about right from what I have seen. If I could find one that had the clutch type SG and GOOD 3.55 gears, a rebuild would run about $500....so still over a grand by the time all is said and done....but yeah, better than $1400. Cant seem to find that combination. I am looking...

    8 3/4 chunk math - sticker shock

Yeah, I could build the 741.....but I dont want to. For one, I could never get the money back out of it if I decided to sell it....no one wants a 741.....new gears would be $200, plus a sure grip at $400 and thelabor to do it at $200-ish.....Would you pay $800 for a 741? I have seen them all...

So, I have been looking for a used 742 case with 3.55s and a clutch type sure grip for a year plus....guess that's the holy grail of rears cause I aint found one local or distant. Have found a lot of variations , most being open and the wrong gears. Have found 489 units as well, same...

    Leaking axle seal 8 3/4

One other tip from a relative newbie at this.... ...dont get too agressive with putting the new seal back in..... and make sure that whatever you use to drive it in - socket, etc - is as large as you can get in there so its not concentrating the taps from the hammer in the center of the seal...

    Tranny "double bump" issue question

I am not "messing" with it....I am shifting from reverse (like after backing up) to either drive or low (to pull out). I suppose I could solve the problem by simply never backing up again. LOL

In what order should i do everything?

So it sounds like your new headers have the one pipe that runs under the cross link? I went with Doug;s headers specifically to avoid that.....figured it would improve ground clearance issues (I already have a deep sump oil and tranny pan combo)....plus ease of install/removal if needed.

In what order should i do everything?

I ran into that on my tranny R/R......putting the tranny in originally with no headers was a breeze... Tougher to drop it and reinstall with the headers in place....the jack I have hads front/back and side/side tilt controls which made all the difference. Other wise one header would have had...

    Tips for installing transmission?
