My son has a 63 Dart 270 225 slant 6 we were contemplating putting a 318 in we have the K member and are concerned about the wiper motor hump on the fire wall. Small block distributor in rear any one dealt with this issue out there?

I built a 63 V8 dart. I make pie cuts on the bulge then hammered it back 3/4". After that I welded it up. I had 1/4" clearance. If I were to do it again I would move it 1". The complication is that when the wiper motor moves with the firewall the wiper transmission rod becomes longer (due to the new location of the motor). You need to shorten (section ) the rod to get it to connect up to the motor. I never completed this part of it as I live in Arizona but I don't think that it is that big of a deal.

Yep, az426 covered it pretty well Bob. To do it right there is some fairly difficult fabrication to do... Most of the ones I see have just been "persuaded" out of the way with a hammer, but then you run in to the wiper issue. In my opinion if you have to go to the trouble of moving the firewall, then you might as well make it worth the hassle by stuffing a big block in there... Not worth it unless your son is going to race the car IMHO...

No need for the K member change as they are the same in the early A. Since the engine bay is designed around the slant 6, there is some considerable fab work that needs to be done. Course I guess you could just beat the snot out of all of it with a hammer. The car is so light, why not stick with the slant? A good warmed up slant will move it along real good with no need for butchery.

Here is a pic of my Dart 63.
Have a 273 in it since several year back.
Another thing to remember is the centerlink.
You need a V8 centerlink, if you stick to the /6 centerlink there is no oil pan clearance.

like RRR said, k members are same. but I agree. give the slant a chance. with good compression , and a super 6 ( 2 bbl set up), and maybe a little better gear, it can run pretty darn decent.
local guy here runs a "purpose " built 62 lancer in the quarter..... just under 10 sec! no turbo, no added gas...... just a heavy flywheel and lots of $$ spent!!! but still....( a hellcat can't keep up!) HA

An opportunity to consider ignition other than a distributor. Magnum V-8 motors have a much smaller distributor that might clear the hump. For your LA engine, you could install a 36-1 toothed wheel behind the crank pulley to use Ford EDIS (see my post & megasquirt site). Later requires a spark timing controller, but those are integral w/ most EFI kits today (getting affordable, ~$1000). If so, install a Magnum distributor just to hold the oil pump shaft down, or I have seen after-market kits for that.
