I've been making a 64 Dart into a daily driver. It hasn't been driven more than a few blocks since around 2000. It was driving fine, but on the 3rd drive of more than a couple blocks its doing something weird. After a couple blocks the transmission smells incredibly hot, it makes a hum, smells, slips, and can't get out of 1st. I've never had a transmission failure like this. My thought is front pump, or debris, clog but I've never had a push button and a part of me is wondering if its trying to be in reverse and 1st at the same time or something strange. Fluid level is correct on the dipstick and clean, and doesnt smell on the dipstick. Thoughts? Diagnosis procedures?

If this is truly a 64 transmission it has 2 pumps, 1 front and 1 rear and should have a ball and trunnion style driveshaft and a bolt on output flange. Also, you are checking the fluid level in neutral and not in park, correct?

I just checked and 63 was the end of the inline filter so yours has the filter in the pan. So, my next move would be to drop the pan and see what you find. The dual pump 904 use a different filter than the later 904s so be careful when buying a new filter, I seem to recall many of these early filters are actually bronze screens that can be cleaned.

Drop the pan. I think your prob will be obvious. Ditch the coolant line filter and use type A.
My experience may not be yours.
