I am looking at a 65 Plymouth Valiant HiPo 273 Commando convertible to part out. Mostly, I'm interested in the differential. If an early a car was built with the HiPo would it be standard/common to have the limited slip Sure Grip, and what is the best way to identify if it is a SG if the tag is missing? I understand that there could be a variety of SG differentials that may be in these cars ranging in gears to sizes. Thanks for the help. Old Dart 66.

Look at the rear end. If it has a bolt on rear cover it is a 7 1/4. Could be a limited slip but probably not. With no tag, you would need to jack it up to check for limited slip.

8 3/4 was optional in 65. Could be.

I think it became an option in mid May 1965.

Supposedly at least a peg leg 8.75 or the 7.25 Sure Grip was required when the 273/235 and 4 speed was ordered after mid-May. As I understand it, too many non-sure grip 7.25s were getting torn up with the 273/235/4 speeds

Thanks Don, I found a bunch of info on the web. Good stuff to know. OD66

You could get an 8 1/4" cone style limited slip from later A bodies .

It will be a Big bolt pattern ( 4.5") with 3" axle tubes and it will require a shortened driveshaft.

While your at it get the '73 up disc brakes, spindles , calipers upper control arms , and lower ball joints. Master cylinder, adjustable proportioning valve.
