1966 Dodge Dart ‘freebie’ Project

-
Well guys looks like this motor will need to be torn down. When inspecting the internals with the oil pan off I noticed number 7 piston had a crack and the lifter lobe was wiped.

I got this motor in a trade from @MidnightSwinger awesome guy by the way. That’s the chance I was willing to take on a used motor. Just glad I inspected it before installing it in the dart. I will continue to source another used 5.2 magnum to continue this project!

Quick question cracked piston/wiped cam lobe that would be from lack of oil pressure? The bores still have really good cross hatch and turning the motor over you can hear compression.

oof. that sucks.

but better you caught it rather than just knocked it in and lit her off and totally wrecked the thing.

if you wanted to be super lo-rent you could always slam a used slug in there...

I’m sorry to see that man. The guy I bought it from had a video of it running/revving before he pulled it and it had normal oil pressure(dummy guage) and sounded healthy.

I like the low rent lol, I actually do have a used 5.2 magnum camshaft. But I’m just worried if I swap the piston and camshaft the camshaft would go flat again. Why would it wipe a lobe like that? Camshaft bearing?

extended oil change intervals? hung a chunk of junk that dropped in to say hello from a nearby neighborhood? collapsed or weak lifter and it just beat it to death? hung a valve momentarily and jammed it?

the fickle spins the wheel of mechanical fate.

If you have the cam you are just one piston away from a repair!

I don’t think it’s the cam bearings specifically, possibly a bad lifter but you would “usually” hear that when it’s running.

Might as well pull the cam and that one piston for a closer inspection. If the cylinder looks good and the crank/rod journals are decent I’d run it with a new/used piston and cam.

I have a stock pump from my 5.9 I picked up after trading you the 5.2. The motor was rebuilt and the pump is like new, it’s yours if you want it.

My son's 440 had 8 cracked piston skirts and the bores still looked pretty good considering they hadn't been touched since 1970. This was around 2019. The machine shop said this happens from time to time.

I’ll take that pump! Lol the budget must be small!

So I dunno it looks like the bores are okay one does have light rust would need honing, looks like bearings would need to be replaced. Here’s some photos of the damage. I’m thinking she lost oil pressure at some point and the roller lifter wiped the lobe and cracked the piston I dunno something like that.

I’ll probably be doing a full rebuild my buddy has a garage that we can do it in. New bearings pistons rings etc everything comes out to $340 shipped at rock auto. I got a good machine shop that’s decent I’ll figure out the total at the point might as well upgrade the camshaft grind 1008 little mild would be fine with stock springs etc. For heads I’ll roll with the punches and rock what I got.

Also I got a magnum camshaft question, the camshaft I pulled out of the magnum block has no oil holes. Is that how they came? I ask because I have another LA roller camshaft with holes in the camshaft was that for oiling for different heads?

man, that looks like it was running that way for a good bit. the crank bearings indicate poor maintenance intervals, but the cam bearings look pretty typical for magnum. those things seem to be made of gorgonzola and puff pastry.
