1967 Dodge Dart Project first test drive

-
When i drove my 68 from CA to Ohio, I got pulled over by 3 cops in 3 different states. (CA, NV, and CO) Anyway, one of the cops opened the passenger door to talk to me and it was the last time that door opened for awhile. The latch post sheet metal gave out during the trip and the door was jammed closed. Had to open it from the backside with the quarter panel interior trim removed. I can't remember exactly how I did it but I think I cut around the post from the back.

The thin sheet metal FATIGUES over time because the weight of the door rides on the post. The door and post should probably should be adjusted so it doesn't ride on the post so much.

If you just weld the missing piece back in place and grind flush, it'll probably happen again. If not to you then your son in 40 years.

I drilled the spot welds out of the Ohio-shaped cage that holds the floating nut inside the quarter, welded a larger second plate on the back side of the pillar, then re-welded the cage back into place. Now I have an overlapping double thickness of metal that should last for a long time. Did it to both doors.
You might consider that.

But, good work on the car so far. I bet your son thinks it's his! :D

Later model dusters have a heavier gage plate welded to the jamb on the back side, the nutplate and cage are welded to that. A lot less cracking. I have a pair of these reinforced nutplates i will be welding into my 67 cuda jambs.

Matt

The time has come. Time to put some color on this bad boy.

Nope. I'm a Mechanic by trade. Body by hobby (with lots of help and guidance from a couple pro's. Very fortunate to have their help on this project.

The fenders are what came with the car. I hadn't even realized they weren't 67 fenders till now. I know the 68 had the round marker lense. Good thing is it came with 4 different grills to choose from.

Ya know,my folks removed the hand controls from their Caravan and it might work for your dad. I can ask them if they want to part with it if it would work for you.

I appreciate the offer, I will run it past him! Last time we talked about him driving, he seemed a little aprehensive. He has trouble seeing out of his left eye from a Diabetes complication. Still excited to go for his first ride though.

Here is a couple pics. One with my mom and son before he lost his leg. The other showing his softer side, after his surgery! He has the best outlook on life. If I can be half the man he is, I would be happy.
