1967 Match Race

1967 Plymouth Barracuda 383/280 HP
vs.
1967 Ford Mustang GT 390/320 HP

Lets take a look...........

1967 Model Year

................................................................Shipping Weights.....NHRA Class

Barracuda 'Fastback' ~ 383/280 HP........... #3202 lbs. .............. C/S = {10.60 to 11.29 Wt/Hp}

Mustang GT 'Fastback' ~ 390/320 HP........ #3155 lbs. .............. B/S = {9.50 to 10.59 Wt/Hp}

Both cars were 'Test Driven' by Performance Car Magazine's, and with each car running.....15.20 @ 91 MPH

Unless there was a class legal upgrade for the 390,going with the Cuda.......

The Mustang..... #3155 lbs. ~ 320 HP = 9.86 Wt/Hp

The Barracuda... #3202 lbs. ~ 280 HP = 11.44 Wt/Hp

But wait,

The NHRA re-factored the 383/280 HP to {300 HP in 1967}, as they believed Mopar
was trying to pull a 'fast one' to get the Barracuda 'Fastback' {383/280 HP} in D/Stock
where it would have devoured the competition.

Yes, the NHRA 're-factored' >

The Barracuda... #3202 lbs. ~ 300 HP = 10.67 Wt/Hp

Both the 1967

Mopar 383/280 HP and Ford 390/320 HP were low-revving 'slugs'.

* Under-Cammed
* Weak Valve-Springs
* Poor Flowing Intake Manifold
* Under-Carbed
* Restrictive Exhaust

Sir, that 's the understement of the century........

As long as a Honda civic is not at the same light with them it should be a good race...

They didn't have a civic back then-it was a N360 that was replaced by the civic In the 70s It's 1/4 mile time was about 30 seconds, probably the same as a Schwinn.
And yes out of the box the 383 and 390 were not amazing but it didn't take long for us toget them breathing better.

I went for a ride once in a '67 383 4 spd barracuda. Fully rebuilt eng/trans/rear built to stock specs. It was slow a stock early 340 a-body would pull right ahead of one of those cars. Those cars are a great foundation for a 400 block stroked....

My experience with a stock 383 was in a 1968 Plymouth Fury III 4 door hardtop. All original, and the build sheet under the seat. The build sheet stated it was ordered with the police package, though never a squad car. The package included the "commando" 383, disc brakes, dual exhaust and dual mirrors. The car ran 15.17 at over 4100 lbs without driver and 1/4 tank of gas and no spare or jack. It had 3.23 gears. We put a Weiand action plus intake and 750 holley on it along with 3.55 and it ran 14.70's. Not bad for well over 2 tons of fun

1967 Barracuda 383 {280 HP}

Unfortunately it sounded like the Mufflers were filled with Mashed Potato's.

Restrictive Exhaust..........YIKES

And that Carter AFB {rated at 575 CFM's} with factory installed smaller jets.........

And the Factory only offering the 67' Barracuda 383 with {3.23 Gears}.

I bought 1969 a 340 forulma s 4 speed fastback in oct of 1968. There was not
many cars that would come near it. Mustangs 390&351s were not even close.
383 cudas were not only slower but they did not handle as well. My friend had a
mach 1 with a 428 and 410 gears and i never did beat him.
Another friend of mine was a sheet metal man. He made 14"by4" scoops that i put under my front bumper and ran 4" dryer hose to my carb. That and a cd ignition
from jc whittney made it at least 1/2 sec faster in the qt mile. I sold it for
$500. When it was still in good condition.

So you're saying tha Frank Bullitt would have had a tough time with a '68 Charger R/T? :D

Mr. GTX,

The only way 'Frank Bullit' could catch that 1968 'Charger 440'........

Was if it was 'parked'........ or if it was driven into some Gas Pumps.

Yep. That sounds about right. :D

I was given a thorough lecture on this fact before I was allowed to watch the movie when I was a kid.

According to Plymouth Experts,

1967 Plymouth Barracuda 383

Was purposely delivered with a low 280 Horsepower Rating, with a 'detuned version'.

th

G-T,

If you read into some of the late-1966 Performance Magazines, Plymouth purposely de-tuned the 383 in the Barracuda.

It was a 'concerted effort' to get the 1967 'Fastback' classed in NHRA D/Stock {11.30 to 11.88 Wt/HP}

The low {280 Horsepower Rating} actually put the Fastback and Convertible in D/Stock for 1967.

But in January 1967, the NHRA re-rated the 383/280 HP to 300 HP.

That put the 1967 Barracuda 383/280 HP {300 HP re-factored} into C/Stock.

Note; A 'true' 1967 383/325 HP Engine would have put the Barracuda in {B/Stock} in 1967, where it
would have 'Zero Chance' in Stock Class.
