1969 Dart Street/Strip (Re)Build

-
better get that hood lookin good. one of the first things people notice when your running a scoop. the dart is going to be too nice for a mediocre hood !! aint mine, but I think flatter black on hoods looks racier. remember the 69 factory hoods? pics of new paint job when it`s done

It will look a lot better. Not what I want but it will be better. But as I've mentioned before, I'm going with John Deere Blitz Black which is currently my favorite black paint. It's mostly flat with maybe a touch of satin to it. My grill, dash, and various other parts are painted with this stuff. It's perfect for everything in my book.

I would change to the 68/69 hemi Dart hood scoop.

I would if I had an extra $700 laying around.

Wow !! They cost $700 ??

$500 something, plus shipping, plus materials to sand it and paint. Or if you get it painted somewhere like a shop, expect more. They wanted $400 to just flat black one side of my hood. That was just a scuff and paint too. Then we're talking an easy $1000 for a new painted hood.

Oh trust me I kno the whole cost of doing a hood. I sell fiberglass parts. Have many guys that back out when they find out the total cost of changing there hood. With shipping and paint. When you said 700 i thought you meant for just a scoop.

Ah. I like that scoop but it won't work for this hood. All that bondo would be exposed and it would look horrid.

It looks like that hood has some damage to it from the accident. Better call the insurance company. Hint hint...lol

What I should have done was keep my foot off the brake and let the car roll and tap the car in front of me.Then I would have been good to go!

you are to be commended for such a commitment you took on, you truly are the definition of a mopar man. I would name that car Phoenix because of you bringing it from nothing to a masterpiece. I am honored to be in the company of such talented masters. what a wonderful car.

I'm definitely not one of the masters here but I do appreciate the sentiment!

I tried and tried but I give up on the hood. Too many issues with my painting equipment, temperature, and contamination. I sprayed the hood and scoop twice now and didn't get it right either time. I've decided I'll have everything ready to go and I'll have the body shop shoot it in they're nice clean booth. So I spent about 5 hours tonight removing what I sprayed with laquer thinner. That was not a fun job. Sometimes you just can't get perfection with a half assed setup and equipment. Also have been learning to take dents out of stainless and polishing it back up. Holy cow I had no idea how much work these take. I bet I have 50 hours in them so far and I haven't even got to the final polishing stage yet. Now I understand why guys want so much money to restore them.

The car is supposedly painted but I haven't seen it yet. Here's a few pics from a couple days prior.

Here's the paint sample. Should look like this in the sun. Will still be sort of maroon in the shade though. Oh well. Good enough.

Looking good, I always enjoy your thread, especially the videos.

hey Clint , have u thot about buying a fiberglas hood w/ the 6 pack scoop built in to it? that`s what I did, and the body man painted it w/ the car. looks pretty darn good. but, I thot the car looked racier when it was flat black before. also , a fiberglass hood is a pain in the a$$ setting around in the garage while ur working on the car. I bought mine out of a place in Cal., was $500 shipped, about 4 yrs. ago.

A bolt on hood from AAR is $625. A pin on hood (which is what I would switch to) is $525. I don't believe they offer free shipping on those items either. Then there's the hood pins, which, the ones I want are $300 per pair (Quik Latch) so that would be $600. Looking at the minis since they are much cheaper at $30 a piece, but I'm not sure why. I wouldn't go with the old school style pin setup. Just don't like them. They rust, scratch from the pins being installed and removed, then they just look like chit. Personal preference. Then there's the sanding and painting costs and possibly pin installation costs if I can't do it myself (my buddy had someone else install his Quik Latch pins). So you can see how I'd EASILY be getting $1000 into a hood. With all the other stuff I've been buying for the car like new front bumper, new tail light bezels, shaving the marker lights, getting hood sprayed, all the equipment for polishing the stainless, new rollers and installation costs for the rear quarter windows, I have to stop somewhere. It's easy for people to say to buy a new hood, but no one is financing my car but me and no one else sees how much I'm spending in other areas. I suppose if someone wanted to help me finance it and throw $500 in my account towards a new hood, that would be awesome!

Car is now painted and they're cutting and buffing it all down. This is before cut. The body looks really straight now.

car looks outa site !!!!!!!! I found a crack in the paint in my front fender , on top next to the hood, musta leaned on it too hard. also a couple spots where I think it might have been sweated on in the sanding process, it is what it is . still looks about as good as my new one in 1968 ! yours is looking better, if it stays like that .

Almost there. Final stages of buffing currently. The new windshield replacement was somehow missed so that will set it back a week. Was supposed to be all done last week. But things are looking good so far. That paint is looking awesome.

looks great ! will be kick a$$ w/ a flat , or satin black hood. I have used the john deere black and like it too. it`s what mine was before it went to the body shop. I always made my hood pins out of alum. 3/8" rod, and bought the small safety pins at attwoods. run 3 front, three back, and two in the center of each side(especially w/ a scoop.) tried four , one in each corner back in the day on the hemi, the hood raised up so far , I thot it was going to tear it off, made 1 run that day. don`t let people tell u that a 6 pack , or hemi style scoop won`t take in some air! there is NO DOUBT IN MY MIND, u couldn`t install hoodpins, w/ all you`ve done to that car! I tried the alum.button safety latches about the size of a quarter. they are neat , but hard to get right and will cause you to scar ur paint up if putting the hood on by urself. only have one in the front center now. will look forward to next November.

Yep it wasn't fun but turned out to be a good thing in the end. Got some structural metal repaired and a better paint job for not that much out if pocket, considering what it would have cost otherwise.
