does any one know what heads I might have on a 1986 360 4 barrel truck motor? would they be j Heads?
and what would the head chamber volume be?

I just pulled the heads off the 360 I replaced in my 86w250. It was a virgin motor since my dad bought it new. Never did anything but change a fuel pump and starter. Could check the chamber size after work tomorrow. They're basically the same as all other 360 heads except for the smog holes under the exhaust ports that are all carboned up

I believe they will be 596s. 308s are the TBI/roller block LA 360s. So the same basic intake ports & similar exhaust ports as J or X heads, but with A.I.R. injection ports in the floor of the exhaust ports. A good head to start with and capable of 400-450hp with basic performance rebuilding and matched parts.

I've ran a couple sets of them on 360 street beaters. Tapped and plugged the a.i.r holes to run headers and cleaned up the ports a little. Always seemed to run ok. Seems like the later heads have a lot more casting flash, and sloppy port entrances then the early ones did. Nothing a die grinder and a little time won't fix though

596s. 308s are best factory stock head according to larry shepard,..intake ports like a X or J but exhaust port sposed to be close to the ports in w-2 heads...

Any idea how big the chambers typically are in 596 and 308 heads?
same as a stock X or J ,..i was wrong in my previous post bout the intake ports being the same,..there not! 308/576 heads have the inlarged push rod holes and to compensate for that the port has a raised roof to get more area past the pushrod hole and the raised roof offers more HP potential...sorry for any confusion...DWB!

Which is? I realize there is a huge range in their advertised numbers. I was just curious if anyone had measured a stock head's chamber volume.
If they did, they'd most likely be different from yours. CC's are all over the place on these castings....

I measures a chamber on one of the 596 heads I just pulled. 74c.c. is what I came up with. That's a head that I know for a fact has never been off the engine til now. Doesn't mean that's what yours will be though. I've measured several of these over the years and they do vary even when untouched

The head cc amounts listed in books seem to be very wide in the ranges. I have normally found open chambered heads in the 72 - 74 cc range. Do not pay attention to the NHRA listings as they often list minimums.

Dartish & Moper pretty Much nailed it down for you.
