1989 318 coolant issue

lol. Thanks for the advice. No pi$$ing contest here. I’m starting to think I just over filled it. Seems to be a pattern for me lately. More is not always better

It's a common mistake. I've done it a lot in the past myself. Hopefully that's all it is.

My comment was directed at the usual who just loves to get peoples' heads spinnin with all the unnecessary. Check the simple stuff first. Remember the KISS rule. lol It usually pays off.

I just went through a 92 d350 and put an extra guard of gear oil in the rear ended and blew out brand new seals. Just my luck lately. Gonna drive the 89 today myself. I’ll post results later.

I have the same system as you.
I fill my rad to the top cold, and my res to the min, cold, and then let it find it's own equilibrium, when it heats up. After that I add coolant to the res only when the system is hot, to the max line.
The only thing I do different is I run a low-pressure cap, maybe around 6psi. So my hoses last; well the newest, the bypass, was installed new in 1999, and the rest came out of the collection of ancient ones, at that same time. Oh wait, I think I switched the heater hoses out for a color change, in about 2002. Ok so that leaves just the two molded ones as ancient, so maybe not all that crazy, lol ....
But my cooling system runs rock-solid between 205 to 207. So I can get away with that.
