I second that Jack
Congrads Jack ! I have enjoyed everyone of them. :-D

I will be picking your brain soon on a good brush gun on my birthday.
the boys and the wife has agreed to buy my next gun I need.:glasses8:
I am thinking 3030 lever action for a good nock down brush gun with good open sights , No scope.
You have dun more with less words then I have........:read2:=D>

Mikey, you're going to be the BIG 50 this year!! Yup, you'll definitely need a new gun. :)

I will make sure Treva see's this thread so they don't forget :-D
You have a birthday coming up very soon don't you Sid.:-k

or did I miss it??

I was thinking the same thing Terry. If he is going after deer, in the brush and shots no longer than 100 yards then a 30/30 light weight is a very good option. Bullet's are easy to get in many weights and not expensive.
I don't think there is much for dangerous game in Mikes part of the world so instant stopping power is of little concern.

Hell, I was going to recommend a 300 Magnum but I guess that would be overkill.:evil2::evil2::evil2:

Congrats jack!! If I ever get the chance to spend some time around you all beers and spirits will be on me. You've done some really good things here that show your character and integrity, Good job!!!:drinkers: :drinkers: :drinkers:

That's my favorite rifle Sid!

Jack

Well to be honest, I'd recommend a lever action .308 for the bush, good hitter up to 200 yards and if fits in a scabard nice.

Personelly I use a 30-06 with a 3-12 variable scope and reload my own shells a little on the hot side.

I also got a 25-06 just for those pesky coyotes, flat and fast and just when they think they're out of range, turns out they're dead.

Terry

I love the 338 win mag but I have only felt like I needed it up in Alaska. congrats on the birthdays and the posts.

Deer, pigs and a cyote or two in brush, If I am lucky a couger
most likely no farther than 100 yards at the most
I have been told about the 270 but never used one.
Knock down bower is the biggest thing I am looking for.
I will be shooting through heavy cover for game

a shell that will not jump off course if I hit a small brush or limb.
lever short action preferred.:-D

Well happy birthday Day later to you Sid :occasion:

On your way to the big 60 each day
Get your banjo out and have a good one.:drinkers:

Jack, I use my .270 for everything from gophers to moose, and mostly fire hollow-point 90 grain that I load a wee bit hot. Can you say F-A-S-T? :)

Mike, my bush gun is a little Remington 660 Mohawk, .308 cal. I usually just load 100 or 110 gr bullets, and avoid shooting innocent trees. :) It's light, fast, and deadly on both ends - kicks like a damned mule on the firing range, but you never feel a thing when you're shooting at an animal.

Thanks for the B-Day wishes guys. Yeah, I may stick around to see how 60 feels Mike. I really don't like the alternative that much. :)

Congrats. Jack! Drink a beer for me!

I use mine for anything from coyote's to moose as well. I also use handloads. I use a 140 gr ballistic tip boattail loaded up to fire at 3180 fps at the muzzle. Very accurate out to 400yds.

Jack

Mike: tell em to get you a 35 cal. in a marlin lever action. The use you described will fit the bill. Go to the gun shop and compare the 30-30 and the 35 cal side by side. The 270 is a great gun for speed and long range but then you can also step up to a 7mm mag. From your old buddy up north. What about a 100 miles. Don't forget the car show this weekend.

If I'm out in the big timber country with lots of cut lines, I usually load some 130 boat tails for the .270, but here on the prairies, I love those 90 grain hollow tips. It's like pushing a hand grenade down their throat and then holding their mouth shut. :stop:
